Does this provide at least 2A per port (and thus can be used as a charger for iPads and the like)?

From what I read in "Pocket PCRef" (ISBN 978-1-885071-40-8 pg 535) a powered hub provides 100 mA at power up, and up to 500 mA at normal operation. From this I'd assume the 500 mA (0.5 Amp) requirement is per port. I can't imagine a port delivering 2 full amps. I use it as a charger for everything with a USB connection. In my experience, it works well. Hope this helps.

What type of power adapter works with this? Will a ciagarette plug type adapter work to hook up to a 12 volt battery?

It takes 12V DC. I use a 12V 15A power supply for the one I have. I'd want something around 1.5A at least.

I currently have the 4 port but need more connections. could the 7 port be connected to the 4 for 11 ports?

Yes. You would need to use one of the 4 to hook up the 7port hub. So total you would have 10 (3+7) ports available.Keep in mind that this hub requires an external power source. You would need a DC Power supply to hook it up to the green plug you see in the picture along with the proper amperage output, depending on what you want to use the usb ports for.

Can I use a dc jack to power the usb hub without the main usb cable connected to a laptop?

Yes you can. I have mine plugged in to the DC power brick and use it to charge my portable electronics.

Perfect for my telescope stuff and accessories

Purchased to connect my telescope and 3 other accessories to a single 20m usb run into my house. Powered it with a 12v power supply, along with all the other equipment, and has worked flawlessly. Expensive, but you get what you pay for. Wish I'd purchased the 7 port initially as got the 4 port just to test but as the 4 port has worked so well will be purchasing the 7 port and will definitely find use for the 4 port somewhere around the house.

FIXES USB AUDIO ISSUES -READ BELOW!!

Fixed my USB AUDIO issues!!! when u plug in more than 1 x usb audio device to a usb controller on your PC (per jack, some Jacks share controllers) then u lose usb clock timing /usb sync, as only ONE translator. THIS HUB FIXES THAT! it gives you a translator per port (4 of them!) to connect 4 x usb audio devices with zero clock drift (which causes distortion after 5-20mins or pops/metallic).. its my #1 tip if you're running usb audio (and plug into a dedicated 2.0 port for best results with audio, especially Roland drivers). Use vb matrix coconut (not laggy asio4all) to then route your usb audio anywhere (to other synths/mixers/DAW) and even after 2-3 hops/routes.. its still pristine!! I run over 100 usb audio channels thru this..in and out of synths and mixers (see picture) its the hero piece in any usb audio setup, it doesn't work without it👱‍♀️🎹
