They have a spring loaded feature which allows you to push the blade up part way to use it. When it is released the blade retracts into the closed position. This does not impact the normal click type function of extending the blade. I consider this a high value purchase as each cutter comes with a blade installed as well as a case with additional blades. They case cam be reused when more blades are purchased. The blades are sharp out of the box and after several months of occasional use I have not had to replace any. Please note, my hand shaking in the video is because it is my left hand and an injury affecting grip strength in that hand.
