Yes, they are messy. Yes, you must keep an eye on your child as he chews on it, as you would any solid substance in his mouth! If that is too much trouble, these are not for you. Also, if you don’t like the smell of maple and molasses (I think they have more molasses than maple) they are not for you. But they are for us, and we like them a good bit! However, sometimes pieces would break off and once, he tried to cough out some piece that had broken off and I hurriedly tried to clear his mouth of any biscuit pieces.
