The movie is based on true events. In response to the 9/11 attack in 2001, the Bush administration declared the War on Terror. The first team inserted in Afghanistan was a CIA team (their leader is played in this movie). They were carrying a lot of cash and most of the 8 team members were acting as civilians. The 2nd response team was a 12-man fully armed US army special forces detachment, ODA 595, which is the focus of this movie, later expanded to 14 men (not mentioned in this movie). The 3rd response team was another army special forces detachment (not played in this movie, but mentioned), who arrived in Afghanistan roughly at the same time. They all worked together in helping the local Afghan forces to capture a large city that had become a Taliban and Al Qaeda stronghold. As far as the US military history is concerned, a most unique thing done by this small band of US soldiers was that they rode horses into battle, though only 1 of them had ever been trained in horse riding. The last time US soldiers fought on horseback was during WW2. Of course, this is not a documentary, but a dramatized account of a story. By the way, this is also a fairly "standard" patriotic movie.
