Afterall, I put it in my cart and clicked "purchase." But if I had a chance to inspect this item at a brick and mortar, I would NOT have bought it at this price. I might have CONSIDERED it at $14.99. But I would have still been on the fence about it. I recommend avoiding this item if you want a high quality item. If you absolutely need this item, this happens to be the cheapest one of its size being listed by Amazon at this time at $59.99.Long Review:You know that feeling you get when you order something you thought would be worth $60 bucks and realized only after receiving it, that the item if priced at $15, would have probably still had a hard time selling to anyone who picked it up in person? This is one of those items.Cheap materials and build quality prevent me from fully enjoying this Cryptex. Top of the Cryptex screwed off almost immediately (exposing 2 side screws which will allow access to the Cryptex compartment without the code). Short, soft, bendy screws clearly indicate "corner cutting" in build.I have a mini-cryptex from when the movie was still popular. The wheels turn easily and smoothly, the ends are tightly fastened. The quality was still only mediocre at best. Soft bendy metal made it just a novelty item that was fun to handle now and then. Now, 2018 - I see the larger version of this, and on an impulse, tell myself, "sure. why not?" Serves me right for being unable to control my impulses... This larger Cryptex was significantly different in terms of build quality. BOTH were made in China. So, for some weird reason, they are actually going down in quality. If that is even possible.Spinning wheels rotate with effort. They are not smooth. Once in a position, they start to shift - yeah, I know - contradictory. But how to explain it? This item is big enough that it will extend the whole length of your palm. As you turn the other dials, you are literally holding onto the dials you have already turned. Since the wheels kind of "grind together" and rotate with some effort, spinning the wheels can affect the other wheels. Small annoying gripe - sure. But the mini-cryptex does not have this problem. The cylinders with the letters on it rotate independently from each other. Also, this version has 6 letters. The mini has 5 letters. Lots of easy significant words for me in 5 letters. Even more in 4. Add an "s" and my significant 4 letter word becomes plural. 6 letters though? hmmmm. A little trickier. They send this cryptex with the default "ILOVEU" using the letter "U" instead of "you." Clever.Still made with the same type of soft bendy pot-metal the mini one was made with... only the mini-one seems to be a better type of soft, bendy pot metal... true. I hope there isn't lead in this. There's just no way to tell from this mystery metal. Just remember, anything that screws into another thing (such as a bolt or a nut), you want BOTH ends to be hardened to some degree. Reason? If one or the other is hardened and the other part is not, you'll strip off the machining. Which leaves us to this item. What happens when BOTH are not hardened AND bent? Well, you mustn't tighten it too tight or leave it too loose - it will certainly break after a couple of operations, then frowny face.So I'm waiting for my frowny-face. I'll update when it happens. Screws are shorter than I'm comfortable with (they extend only half way through an already thin walled piece. It's not even clear they are held together by the screw or some sort of initial friction created at the factory from squeezing the two pieces together.Poor quality build - Minus 1 Star.Poor quality metal - Minus 1 Star.Over Priced for what it actually is - Minus 1 Star.Included "lord of the rings" for him and her - though fun at first, are also pretty cheaply made (I understand, people have to make money - but THAT much more money?! ew). No one will feel that these rings are high quality items. They are clearly for play only. No stars added or deducted.All in all, I would have avoided if I encountered this item in a brick and mortar. For the manufacturing practices today, this product is exactly what you'd expect from an assembly line product: effective, functional, and of course (importantly) - efficiently made. Yes, the ends were loose upon arrival - why would this be? It could be because they have instructions for how to take this piece off in order to reset the code - how crazy. After you tighten the ends, the overall product is relatively nice. The build is weighty, the metal is soft (I wouldn't drop it), but the detailing is pleasant. Combination worked as expected, the dials rotated relatively easily - yes they may rotate a little together (OMG, just hold the other ring down with your hand, its not crazy) - is this an exact Da Vinci Cryptex replica? Of course it isn't, its an assembly line product.Ultimately, if you were deciding between this or some other physical gift - I would lean to this with a fun activity for the clue.
