MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!A search is underway for a missing caving party of six women, presumed lost somewhere in the Appalachian mountains. Then a survivor, Sarah(Shauna Macdonald) turns up, suffering from shock and amnesia. Unable to get any sense from her, Sheriff Vaines(Gavan O'Herlihy) is insistant that she should join a rescue/search party for other survivors. Using a dilapidated old mine lift, the small group descend into the cave system. However a terribly mutilated body is soon discovered, and Sarah suddenly comes under suspicion from the others. What they don't realise is that very soon they will need Sarah very much as they come under attack from a vicious and very deadly assailant.I've got to admit this turned out to be a pleasant suprise. I really wasn't expecting very much, and this film is a very competant if formulaic sequel to a slightly overrated horror film. A lot of vitriol is aimed at the film by some quarters for existing in the first place and for being a sequel to a film that didn't require one, but I think it's better just to sit back, disengage the brain and enjoy it for what it is, an action packed, gory horror. What is missing in this sequel is any originality that sets it apart from its predecessor. Okay, there is a very silly ending that tries to prove that blood is thicker than water, and the subterrainian creatures are slightly different, but thats about it, and the characters this time round are not half as well drawn as in Neil Marshall's original film. One thing that is present and correct are the obligatory bloody set pieces, the best probably being a tooth and nail fight in the creatures toilet.To sum up, an enjoyable no-brainer, but I do hope that they leave the series as two films, now all loose ends have been tied up.
