It was the third Rosamunde Pilcher book that I had read, the first being Winter Solstice and the second being The Shell Seekers. While this book follows the Shell Seekers and has one character in common, the references to The Shell Seekers are few and very small so you don't have to read them in order. While in "September"s favor there were no characters that I really couldn't stand, there were also none that I really loved either. I liked most of them well enough but none of them really jumped out at me as being special enough to make me get completely sucked into the book, anxiously awaiting a time when I could do some reading. The Shell Seekers definitely made me feel that as did Winter Solstice...but Coming Home(which I read after September) REALLY grabbed me! I LOVED that book and it is definitely my favorite of Ms. Pilcher's books. Although very long, longer even than this one which is over 700 pages, I never felt like it was TOO long.in fact from the time I got to the halfway point I was dreading the end and kept checking to see how much was left..if it had been another 1000 pages I would not have minded at all. September also didn't seem too long to me although I have heard others say it was.
