The communicator is all plastic, and has lights and sound built in, the batteries (2-AAA) were installed when I received it. It was simple to turn the switch on, press the button and the cover flips open with the characteristic opening sound. The buttons work as well and give you a "scanning" sound and some clips of Kirk and Spock that sound like audio recordings from the TOS. This should go nicely with the Type 2 Phaser I got a couple of years ago. Nice props for an original series Star Trek themed party or get together. The price was right and it's fun, what more could you want?
