To answer your question, yes, the handles can be left off. I bought this as I needed a stable and flat platform for a laser cutter. It comes flat packed and it is HEAVY! I was tempted to get the 72" version of this but I'm glad that I didn't as tat would have been to much for me to handle. The heaviest part is the solid wooden top. which comes beautifully finished, as do the stainless steel drawer fronts. I allowed myself a whole afternoon to assemble it. All parts are numbered and/or described and I would urge you to read the instructions (and follow them) before starting. Would I buy one again?
