Hawkins sounds terrific, and he plays with a much richer tone than he did during the last years of his life in the 1960s (when he was drinking heavily). Some of the earlier albums in this collection are so obscure that they do not even have Wikipedia pages, and a number of the less obscure albums received mediocre reviews. Nevertheless, serious jazz collectors will enjoy Hawkins' masterful performances, which are surprisingly strong despite those low reviews. It's just too bad that this group of recordings wasn't delivered via Amazon Prime. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Sorry, Bean! *by T***R on Reviewed in Germany on June 2, 2017* Ich muss sagen, dass ich von dieser Zusammenstellung etwas enttäuscht war. Ich bin seit vielen Jahren Coleman-Hawkins-Fan, wegweisend waren für mich seinerzeit seine Aufnahmen mit Django Reinhardt, die für mich immer noch zum besten Jazz überhaupt zählen.Zunächst mal zur Ausstattung der CD: Die ist eher bescheiden. Es sind gerade mal die Titel der LPs angegeben. Beteiligte Musiker Fehlanzeige. Na gut, dafür gibt's das Internet. Schwierig wird die Recherche allerdings dadurch, dass die LPs selbst wiederum Sampler sind. Am Ende habe ich aber zu allen Songs irgendwie Infos rausbekommen, aber es war Arbeit.Was an der Musik teilweise nervt, ist das geschätzt 25% der Songs mit süßlichen Geigen, Harfen, komischen Chören etc. unterlegt ist. Offenbar ein Versuch, das Ganze massengeschmacktauglicher und damit verkäuflicher zu machen. Aus heutiger Sicht purer Kitsch. Von diesem sehr gewöhnungsbedürftigen Sound sind die Platten "The Hawk in Hi-Fi" und "The gilded Hawk" betroffen plus ein paar weitere.Auf der Platte "The Hawk Returns" sind zwar keine Geigen, aber es ist klar zu hören, dass die Mitmusiker dort nicht auf der Höhe des Meisters sind. Auch das läuft eher unter der Kategorie "mittelprächtig".Entschädigt wird der Hörer unter anderem durch die LP "The Hawk flies high" mit J.J. Johnson, Hank Jones, und Oscar Pettiford. Der Name passt: Die Top-Musiker heben ab, da ist kein Halten mehr. Weitere Highlights finden sich auf der allerersten CD, insbesonder die Aufnahmen mit Howard McGhee aus den Vierzigern swingen auf höchstem Niveau.Fazit: Wenn er gut ist, dann ist er richtig, richtig gut, da sind 5 Punkte noch zu wenig. Leider ist aber zuviel Füllmaterial auf dieser CD, daher komme ich insgesamt nur auf 3 Punkte.
