This coating is designed to block 99% of UV rays, so it protects you from the sun. When you hold a Tumella umbrella with a design against the sun, you will not see any sunlight coming through. When we designed this umbrella in the Netherlands, we thought it would be a good idea to use this coating because, firstly, it protects from the sun, but also it creates a beautiful black background for our designs. Please note that only our umbrellas with designs have this UPF50+ coating applied. Our solid colors (black, navy blue, green, etc.) do not have this coating applied and are sun-resistant with T210 fabric. Its wind resistant seems like it would not easily break in heavy winds. It’s not very large so that helps with the structure of the umbrella. My only complaint is that it’s hard to close my hands were wet from holding it and they kept slipping off the handle when I tried to shut it. I had to press it against my chest to close it. It’s definitely harder to shut and secure than any umbrella I have ever owned. I bought two, one for my child.
