does it switch on automatically when tap operated

That depends on the tap. Many taps have a micro-switch which means that when they are turned on, they operate a pump. That is how it works in my system - a simple £10 tap from Amazon which closes the loop to the battery and the pump works really well. But if you have an old tap without the switch, no, it won't work.

is it ok with warm -hot water

i used it to power my flush toilet, if it was up to me i will try it but be ready to fit it as pre heater

Will the pump pull water out a container with no water in the pipes or do the pipes need to be primed with water before it will suck water through?

The pipes require priming. However, if you ensure the container outlet to the pump is at tje bottom of the container, it will pull the water through.
