I'm not sure if that's the "official" name for it but it's an additional length of shank that attaches with a screw and fits into the regular shank like a puzzle piece. Then it snaps into the foot as usual. I couldn't figure out why the shank was about a half an inch too short at first and wondered how to fix it - what can I say, I'm not Einstein and forgot I had the extender! That said, I adore this gathering foot. It makes beautiful ruffles so easily. I haven't had any problems with the needle catching, you just have to make sure you keep the needle in the center position. I don't know how I did ruffles with out this (and my pleating foot, another essential!).
