    Something (not) About Maudelin

*by L***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 June 2015*

Something About Maudy turned out to be something of a pleasant surprise. Why had I expected the kind of chick-lit whereby the greatest problem our heroine faces is hooking the alpha male? And where she spends her meantime slipping through the clutches and claws of inferior sorts, those not quite up to scratch – awful pun intended, sorry. Was I judging a book by its cover? Blue Porsche, sexy pink slip of a thing the young Maudy looks positively poured into, the faithful feline…I obviously hadn’t noticed the church in the background, but was nevertheless taken by the cover to not want to read the blurb, to just dive in…Without giving too much away, the book is written in 1st person narrative, hardly discursive but a free-flowing, chatty style that swiftly drew me into Maudy’s world, not so much via my being a fly on the wall, but more as her confidant, by the way she introduced to the characters making up her parish – she’s a pastor, by the way, how different and unexpected is that!Cleverly, though, it isn’t so obvious at the beginning, and – this is the last I’ll say re-the story – Maudy, against her nature, flirts with a total stranger in a shoe shop – I think it’s a shoe shop; I know she gets her heels stuck in the carpet. Ok, maybe not, but the point is – no pun intended this time – is that, no sooner the flirting over and she’s having lunch with her guy (who at least turns out to be bald so there’s hope for all of us).But no, the book doesn’t take that route at all. It’s a bit of a red herring. And so I recommend you read this wonderfully philanthropic book, one with an optimistic outlook, a book that offers faith and hope, without ever reverting to the trite or saccharin; it’s well worth it.Well written !

    Something about Maudy

I recommend this refreshingly different book to all fans of contemporary fiction.Pastor Maudy is a wonderfully different character with a big heart. The elderly declining church congregation weren't ready for the stiletto heeled Porche driving pastor determined to stand her ground and extend the reach of the church deep into the local community. She hides her own doubts and deals with each calamity the town faces with her own special style. As well as great characters and humour through Maudy reaching out to the community the book covers issues important to all of us. Violence and the safety of children and young adults at school, bullying, divorce and infidelity and the long term effects of brain injuries. The book gives a lovely slice of modern day living and how care in the community should happen in practice.A very enjoyable read.

    Loved it

I didn't really know what to expect when I downloaded Something about Maudy with my KU subscription but I am glad I did. Maudy's assignment causes a reaction in the town of Blackfish as she attempts to take control of her congregation, and amid the 'goings on' and problems she has to face. Maudy is quite a character, she's strong, flawed and funny at times.Delinda McCann has made Maudy believable and the same can be said for the secondary characters in Something About Maudy even John Wesley!. The MC is a modern woman in a modern world. I enjoyed following her journey and the problems she and her congregation had to face. It is written in the first so we really get to know Maudy. At times she made me smile with her inner thoughts.A well rounded story and a well written book.
