She is a sensitive person, very aware of the feelings of others and how she might affect them. Pampered by an unscrupulous 'guardian', she is turned on by this woman, when her father dies leaving her apparently destitute. Meanwhile, our 'princess' maintains her poise and composure, not allowing her misfortune to change her outlook on life. She is still kindly and caring to those she sees as worse off than herself and discomforts the tyrannical 'guardian' by refusing to be bowed by her down turn in fortune. Eventually, her fortunes turn for the better, when someone she had not thought of as a friend, turns out to be her saviour. I have always loved The Secret Garden and this book is close on being just as good. A delightfully told story and well worth reading at any age. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A reasonable choice for a great novel *by P***B on 19 February 2015* This edition has no pictures except the cover one, which is a good one (the scene of the sixpence coin). I preferred this to what I had seen elsewhere, that is, ugly pictures, which may damage the reader's vision of the novel, and understanding of the period. Of course, as a French I was rather spoiled about "A Little Princess" pictures, because we had editions with illustrations by Marc Bloch, a true wonder. About the novel itself, I would say, it suits very young girls only if they are quite mature (particularly, if they are intellectually gifted; and/or if their maturity has been forwarded accidentally, by woes for instance, or family misunderstanding) ; if not, I would not recommand this novel before ten. It may not please egoist girls. Boys? I really do not know.
