    Way overpriced but works

*by M***Y on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 17, 2010*

The bottom line -- I've had PF for years now and the ONLY thing that's helped has been taking 6 months or more off from my favorite activity (tennis). This last bout I decided my tennis time is getting too short for me to do this and so I bought this book against my better judgment. Three weeks later and I'm nearly pain free (not 100% but given that I've had this particular session of PF for six months without the slightest improvement this is remarkable). Now the bad - it's WAY overpriced. In a microcosm it is a perfect example of our current medical system in the U.S., where an aspirin in a hospital can cost you $10 (or more), and where doctors wear masks for a reason (if they're going to rob you they might as well be disguised). I don't have any solutions to that problem, but the real crime here is that your medical insurance won't pick up any portion of the cost of this book to help ease your economic pain. The book could have been a two page pamphlet -- and priced at about $5 would have been about right. In any other industry or situation this would have been the case. But because those of us in pain are willing to pay almost anything for relief, robbery can and will be rewarded.Get this book, get well, but share the secret among as many of your fellow sufferers as you can so they don't have to spend the money. (I have done this in person to all my friends -- I would do it here on the web but I'd probably get sued).(And, Jim, you should be ashamed of yourself. I know I would).

An effective treatment in a short, easy-to-read book

*by W***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 6, 2013*

Having been affected by plantar fasciitis, I was pretty desperate for a solution when it occurred. This book is a short, easy-to-read, and to-the-point discussion of plantar fasciitis. Most importantly, it also presents an effective protocol for treating plantar fasciitis and alleviating its symptoms. The treatment involves direct stretching of the plantar fasciia, which is something I haven't seen mentioned in other books on running injuries. The only person to talk about this to me was, like the author of this book, a physical therapist. The author also gives a protocol for effective stretching of the calf muscles; this is more detailed than just "stretch regularly", which is the summary of advice from other books. I also appreciated the references to published medical studies, which gave me confidence that the author had investigated the topic and was doing more than repeating received wisdom. The author has a definite focus on patient education. The one negative that will probably cause most people to avoid this book is the price. It's available for a discount on the author's website, but even that might still cause people to balk. All I can say is that I think this book is worth the price (or, the author deserves the price for putting this book together). As I said, I haven't seen the suggested treatment mentioned in other books. Yes, the information could have been summarized in a shorter manner, but I appreciated knowing the reasoning and the "why" as opposed to a mere recitation of "do this!"

    Yes, it worked

*by U***K on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 10, 2014*

I bought the book, I read the book, I did the recommended treatment, and my foot is better. Four months ago, I slipped off a step and brought back the fasciitis that had been gone for thirty years. Two weeks into the treatment I'm walking normally most of the time and the muscles I abused by limping for so long are getting better. The author says typically eight weeks, so I'll definitely keep on keeping on.I've read numerous criticisms of the book--too short, too expensive, too much research reporting, not enough "treatment" in the treatment, the information is available online from other sources, and on and on. Doesn't it miss the point to complain about the details rather than whether the treatment worked for you? Okay, the details.I looked online. I'm the person in my crowd people come to when they can't find something and need help searching, so I've had successes looking for stuff. The problem was finding what was useful. I was swamped with information, but there was no coherent thread, nothing telling me which of the dozens of possibilities actually worked and which worked better than others. It didn't take long to conclude I wasn't going to find what I needed in a reasonable period of time.I like the research reviews. Most of the pages and pages of "recommendations" I found online only had testimonials--people who liked the product enough to recommend it, people who were so unhappy they panned the product, and probably some shills pretending they were happy or unhappy. What I wanted was to know what worked and how well, not how popular it was. That's what you can find by doing the kind of digging the author did. He knew where to look. Is it boring? Yes. Most research reports are. The literature review for one of my efforts can be used as a sleeping aid.Yes, it's a short book. I ordered the book because I was in pain, not because I was looking for reading material. I read it and found what the author said usually works for most people and started doing it. Yes, it's expensive for a short book. I don't know what it should cost. Somebody will suggest putting a price on pain--e.g., how much walking without pain on my recent vacation might have been worth. I don't have a handle on that one. At the hourly minimum wage, I spent about half the cost of the book in my frustrating attempt to find THE ANSWER online, and about half of the book's cost on shoe inserts that looked like they'd work about as well as any, based on the testimonials. That's the cost of the book and I didn't have the relief I wanted. It's been a few years, but when I was seeing a physical therapist after shoulder surgery, I got a discount and an hour was still more than twice the price of the book. And there isn't enough to the recommended treatment. Getting relief from pain by doing something quick and easy is bad? I bought the book because I was in pain, not because I needed a way to while away the hours or wanted to do something complicated.Okay, I'm happy I got the book and happy the treatment worked for me.MY GRIPE--AND IT'S A BIG ONE: that a person comes looking for something leading to relief of pain and Amazon is selling it through a vendor who ships it "within 2 to 3 weeks." So 14 to 21 days after I place the order, they'll drop it in the mail. That's a LONG time to be in pain--and I didn't see that when I ordered. As I write this, there are 35 other people willing to sell a new or used copy of the book and many of them say things like "delivery is usually in 5 to 8 days" or "please allow 4 to 14 days for delivery." It was over three weeks from the day I placed the order until I had the book in my hands. If you're going to order a copy, check the delivery promise.
