If your carving entails to do precise (fine) detailing, the 18oz will begin to hurt your hand. I find that the the heavier the mallet you have a tendency to hold it tight. With the 12oz your hand will be more relaxed & use it for longer and most importantly better control. It is a well balanced tool. **Q: Is this mallet offered in left handed model?** A: works for both hands **Q: Can this mallet be used for batoning a froe or is there a better option?** A: I've never used it for that. I'd use something a bit more solid though. **Q: Can this be used for jointing pieces together** A: Depending on what the jointing is like, i have used it for gentle tapping.
