## Overview

Learning Resources Spike The Original Fine Motor Hedgehog is a multi-sensory toddler toy featuring 12 chunky, colorful quills that develop fine motor skills, color recognition, and early numeracy through interactive play. Designed for children 18 months and older, Spike’s numbered holes promote counting and sequencing, while its compact design ensures easy storage and portability. Perfect for Montessori-inspired learning, daycare, and travel, this award-winning toy combines fun and education to prepare little learners for future academic success.

## Description

This hedgehog lost his quills and only your little ones can help him get them back! Spike is a fine motor skills toy that helps kids build hand muscles and fine motor skills development as they replace the chunky, peg-shaped “quills” within the holes that dot the smiling hedgehog’s back. The learning doesn't end there—Spike's colorful quills also lend themselves well to lessons in counting, sorting, and color identification skills. Kids can arrange quills by warm or cool colors, work on sequences and patterns by alternating colors, or count the quills with numbers printed on this fine motor toy for toddlers. Once playtime is over, the hedgehog is a snap to clean up—each piece is made of plastic that can be easily wiped clean, and the quills stow snugly inside the hedgehog body.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: are the quills rubber or plastic?**
A: The quills on mine are NOT rubber, but are a sturdy, hollow plastic. That being said, I'm sure a set of strong gums / teeth could make permanent indents in them because they are hollow. Each quill has a very tiny hole in each end (1.5 mm wide), probably for manufacturing purposes, but it's big enough that saliva or bathwater could get trapped inside and grow gunk if you aren't careful. Each quill is 3 5/8" long. The circular part that pokes into the hedgehog body is about 5/8" in diameter and slides 1" into the body. The ergonomic end for little fingers to hold is a 7/8" x 5/8" oval.

**Q: Is there a way to obtain replacement quills? We had emailed the listed address and the message was returned. Thank you!**
A: Also came here with the same question

**Q: How long can it be used?**
A: Love this toy my grandson does it over and over! Not only good for colors but also numbers and coordination

**Q: Is it good for travel?**
A: Yes, the spikes fit into the shell for easy storage. If planning to use in a vehicle or airplane I would suggest a travel tray.
