(3 cables)** A: If your sub has built in plate amp, then you can use a 3.5mm to RCA cable. Most of these cables terminate with left and right channels (RCA end). Depending on the subs input options (LFE only or RCA LEFT/RIGHT) you would use the cable with Y adapter while leaving one of the 3.5 mm to RCA L/R unplugged (RCA end) because it's for a center channel. When selecting more than two speakers or channels in the Asus control panel, you will have an option to swap center and sub channels so it really doesn't matter if you plug in L or R to sub. As I mentioned earlier, if sub has L and R " aka low or line level inputs" RCAs you may need a 2nd Y adapter (female to two male RCA) if your sub manufacture specifies. In most subs, the LFE is the left input if only has two RCA (vs 3 or 1). You want a sub with frequency (crossover) and volume controls. If sub is not loud enough, then this most likely means the two RCAs need to be connected with the additional Y adapter. Again all depends on manufacture specs for sub. Now for the front speakers: you will need external 2 channel amplifier or AV receiver if speakers are not active or have built in amps. So another 3.5mm to RCA L/R cable is needed (card to amp, then speakers to amps speaker terminals). On this card, the bracket is labeled (etched) for each 3.5mm female jack. Off top of my head, 2nd port should front L/R, 4th maybe center/sub (or else it's surround channels). Last or bottom port glows red as this is optical out shared with surround back. First port should be line in or Mic input. Don't quote me on this... Look for labels! Confused? Sorry... May help if you share model of speakers and sub. Some Linux distros just don't play nice (mostly not at all) with the on-board Realtek ALC sound capabilities.Linux (Fedora 26 in this case) just recognised it and configured it: got 5.1 surround sound without having to do any manual intervention.Works well on Windows 10 too. The PC is a dual Fed 26/ Windows 10. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Definitely worth it *by R***S on 4 November 2013* The sound from my onboard ALC887 card coupled with a relatively cheap Panasonic 5.1 surround sound was grand for music but absolutely appalling for movies. I wasn't sure which was to blame. I read all the forums, all the blogs. Still couldn't pin which was at fault. So after humming and hawing eventually decided to take the plunge. I'm glad to report it was definitely worth it. The card comes with an adaptor for optical input/TOSLINK and a standard aux cable. I'm using the adapter with optical input to great success. Also it was recommended to use a different set of driver which I downloaded and installed with no problems, without looking at drivers in box.
