The Wedding Date Review: A true California romance! - I need to start this review with a disclaimer - I haven't read very many romances. I remember getting my hands on a few Harlequins of my aunt's while growing up, and the premise of a set, expected romance with a mysterious and chiseled, manly man just didn't appeal to me. I was under the impression that's what romances were! And now as an adult I've read a couple delightful "young adult" romances (Rainbow Rowell and Amy Spalding) but as a grown woman, these were not romantic escapes for me as much as fun forays into a teenager's mind. And then came The Wedding Date. From the few first pages, I couldn't set it down. Guillory provides just enough details to have a sense of place, and as a Bay Area native, it was so good to read a book where my local geography was on point! The characters are well-drawn and believable, and I especially like how Drew and Alexa are both people - imperfect, headstrong, impatient, but also loving, real, HILARIOUS characters that I really rooted for. I liked that both characters had lives and struggles and accomplishments outside of the relationship. The book also does a good job showing how men and women can both be terrible at interpreting communication! One more disclaimer - I am a known prude when it comes to books with explicit content. But the sex scenes were fun and engaging (and funny) and dare I say: hot. I liked Drew and Alexa and wanted them to have a good time with each other - and, ahem, they do. My fave character aside from the leads is Carlos and I really hope he's featured in an upcoming book! Alexa was a dedicated, hard-working, and smart woman. I loved her passion for her work and how much she wanted to help her community. Drew was a kind, charming, and swoon-worthy man. I also was so surprised by the development and inclusion of so many wonderful side characters. I knew Drew’s friend Carlos already since I read “The Proposal” first when it was a @hellosunshine book club pick and that book is “his” story ... I genuinely loved every character that the author created in this story. I am going to read the other two books in this series because I cannot stop thinking about these characters! The romance between Alexa and Drew was perfectly paced and executed. The way their relationship developed felt so honest and realistic. Their relationship slowly changed from a fake relationship into a real relationship with deep feelings. It was so much fun watching them take chances together and realize how perfect they were for each other. Alexa and Drew were so supportive of each other and genuinely wanted to see each other succeed. Their dedication to each other made my heart grow 50 times bigger. Even though there were moments of predictability, this book was still extremely enjoyable! The author did a great job at keeping the book entertaining and hilarious! There were moments of miscommunication, which was understandable but so frustrating! The miscommunication definitely added a lot of tension between Alexa and Drew which kept the plot moving and it felt realistic. Overall, this was a wonderful romantic comedy. I gave it a 3 but it was more a 3.5. I like a good fake boyfriend/girlfriend story. Alexia and Drew get stuck in an elevator and they have what felt like an immediate attraction. Drew is intown for a wedding where his ex is marrying his best friend. He's going dateless and asks Alexia to go with him. She reluctantly agrees. She's the only black person at the wedding it's not as awkward as she first thought but there are issues. Mainly her self esteem regarding her body size. And other attendees commenting negatively about her size and race. This becomes an issue for her throughout her time with Drew. And although they have conversations about race issues. There's no real dialog about her feelings of inadequacy.
