Creating interim scarf joints complicates the install and runs the risk of having visual issues. On the other hand 16' pieces of crown are quite unwieldy and I would put out there impossible to install by yourself. Enter crown hangers. Sure you could probably come up with a jig yourself, but these are cheap, adjustable, and the screw/nail you need to hold them up remains hidden behind the finished crown piece. Two of these was all i needed to install my crown and I highly recommend getting a set to help you out. By the way coping your joints is the way to go, especially in an older house. If you don't know what I mean go check out the fine home building website and/or by a trim book. I have also reviewed a bosch 18 Ga nailer on here and it excelled at this install task.Update 02/20/2016Still recommend these for any DIY person hanging crown themselves. I am adding photos of the product adjustment range to address a question someone has posted. I have had no durability issues with these to date. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good, but not Great *by Y***N on Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2010* I was able to put up all the crown by myself with this item, but it doesn't slide up or down as much as I would like since there are larger crown moldings availble than the typical size (4''-5'')that this would work well with. Be wary that it is cumbersome to use this product when you are using multi-layered crown at a section. That means that you are combining several different pieces to create your crown. Also, when you have to adjust your crown while hanging on the hangers, many many times the crown hanger would fall off the nail and that means you have to figure out how to take the crown back down and retrieve/rehang your hanger again. Solid design and I like the adjustability as opposed to the other ones on Amazon which are fixed.Background: Carpenter by trade. I don't have a crew of guys its just me, so this is a life saver when hanging crown. I do suggest getting at least two to four sets, so you can set them up all around the room, so you can breeze through each room.
