The lightly gradually brightens which is a lovely gentle way to wake up. It doesn't work so well in summer, but is brilliant in winter when it's dark outside in the mornings! The sound quality of some of the sounds isn't the greatest, such as the waves, but overall it's not too bad. There are a lot of buttons and the front and top which can make it quite confusing to operate or change settings without the instruction book on hand.
