After a bit of work, I was able to scrape off all the stubborn filament residue with the Knife tool. I don't yet know how useful the other tools will be (the X-Max has a wonderful spring steel removable plate that lets you twist it one way and the other until the printed model just pops right off) but as far as I'm concerned, it's worth the price just to have the Knife and be able to scrape the build plate nice and clean.
