So even if diluted down to about 70%V/V the same as hand sanitiser it may be quite an unpleasant if you use it for this purpose. You could distil the alcohols to separate them from the dye and other stuff, but this is illegal in the UK!. Also methylated spirit contains about 5%V/V methanol which is poisonous and damages nerve cells including those of the ears and optic nerves. If the methanol would cause harm at this level in ethanol I could not say without knowing how often, how much and to what end use hands or surfaces, it would be used. **Q: Is this clear (white) methylated spirit or not? The answers below are contradictory.** A: The one I received was purple, not clear. **Q: Can this Methylated Spirits be used to clean an old clock movement** A: I do not know. I would say yes - but only on the metal parts. I wouldn't use it on anything that isn't solid. Glass, metal yes, but it could damage other parts. I don't know what other materials are inside an old clock, or if it would damage the wood if you accidentally got some on the wood. I use it to clean my bedroom window and it does a good job, as well as for my alcohol stove. **Q: Is this pure ethanol (100%)?** A: No - if it was pure ethanol it would be sold as ethyl alcohol or, er...ethanol? The clue is in the 'Methylated' part of 'Methylated Spirits'... This is a quote from the great God Google: "Methylated spirits ("metho") is a mixture of ethyl alcohol (95%) and methyl alcohol (%5). The methyl alcohol is poisonous and is added to prevent the methylated spirits being used as cheap drinking alcohol." "Other typical additives include isopropyl alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and methyl isobutyl ketone" ...all of which are poisonous and will do nasty things to you if you drink them, so don't.
