Yes, you can do puzzles straight into a flat table without a board like this - but once you’ve started the puzzle, you have to leave it there, meaning the table’s then “out of action” for a few weeks. The absolute joy of this well made board is you can pick it up (carefully) with your puzzle on it and move it from room to room, and do your puzzle wherever you are in the house. Gone are the days of making bits of puzzles on the dining room table before having to clear them away in time for dinner.The board is of excellent quality; sturdy without being excessively heavy. Easy to carry by yourself; I have managed to navigate this board up and down stairs without too much difficulty.In terms of size, I have found it to be ideal for all 1000 piece puzzles I have purchased, however I would double check on the sizing of 'panoramic' puzzles and oddly shaped ones such as circular ones you can buy, as I can't say whether or not these would fit.The material of the board keeps the pieces in place nicely with the dust cover serving as a very useful protector when not in use. Overall, tremendously happy with this purchase.
