Easy to install, responds rapidly, no hub required
This is one of the first Thread- and Matter-based devices from Aqara. Thread devices are still fairly new to market and I've found that some other competing devices are quite buggy. This one was very straightforward and worked exactly as expected. The sensor is supplied with strong adhesive strips and also an optional magnet if required. I found the adhesive was more than sufficient to stick to the door and door-frame. Most older Aqara devices are Zigbee-based and need an Aqara hub, which acts as a Matter bridge to Apple Home, Alexa or Google Home. This sensor directly supports Matter-over-Thread, so no additional hub was required. Instead it connects wirelessly with my Apple TV which contains a Thread border router. Installation to Apple Home was a breeze; it paired very quickly after scanning the Matter QR code and then appeared in the Home dashboard. After that it was very easy to set up automations; I've set it to turn the kitchen heating off if the back door is open. The device responds almost instantly to opening and closing. Time will tell in terms of battery life. I wish all smart home devices were this simple!

Works perfectly with Samsung Smartthings
My original Samsung Smartthings Multipurpose sensor worked intermittently for a number of years, but eventually failed. So I replaced it with a new one from Samsung's new supplier Aeotec. This was completely useless and took me an hour just to connect it to the Samsung hub. It worked intermittently for a day, so I returned it as unreliable. Instead, I bought the Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 which worked perfectly. I started the Smartthings App, then pulled out the battery isolator tag from the Aqara device and the App recognised it straight away. I didn't even have to add a new device. I scanned the QR code and the device was installed automatically. I only had to specify which room I wanted it in. Works perfectly and only took a minute to install.

Despite a good reputation, Aqara products have spectacularly failed in my home setup
I had heard good things about Aqara products, and had high hopes for these Matter-compatible sensors. I bought five of them to cover all our external doors, along with the Aqara M3 hub. Unfortunately, for me, this was a poor decision. I have a fairly extensive home automation setup based on Apple Home, and am knowledgeable about tech, but these sensors did not play ball. Once I had set up the M3 hub and installed the Aqara app I start the process of adding the sensors through the app as child devices. All five failed - they would be recognised by the app, but when adding them to the hub I repeatedly received an "other error: code 1" message. While this was far from promising, I decided that I would bind the sensors through Apple Home directly after setting up the hub as a bridge. While the sensors would bind, some after a few attempts, they failed at their primary function of detecting the opening and closing of the doors. Of course I double checked that I had fitted them according to the instructions with the required distance between sensor and contacts. Both the sensors I fitted detected the door opening and closing a couple of times, but after that the status did not change, one stuck on closed and the other open. I did not fit all five sensors after this and continued to struggle with the two I had fitted. I removed them from Apple Home, factory reset the sensors and tried again. One sensor then wouldn't bind at all, failing multiple times. The other bound first time, but once again stopped sensing the movement of the door. Ultimately I gave up struggling and decided to return all my Aqara kit. Despite other good reviews my experience means that Aqara is now a brand I don't trust to perform as intended.

Simple, reliable but bulky
I have a number of Eve Door and Window sensors in my house but I thought I’d give this Aqara sensor a shot as it seemed to offer the same features for less money. It was simple to add the sensor to HomeKit and there was no need for a hub or a companion app. The two parts of the sensor have handy alignment marks that make it easy to position them for best results. So far, I’ve found this sensor more reliable than my Eve sensors, which occasionally go off line in HomeKit and need to be reset by removing the battery. My one complaint about Aqara’s sensor is that they are quite a bit larger than Eve’s equivalent and less discreet when installed. The battery powered half is about double the size and its pill shaped design seems at odds with square shaped door and window frames.

Easy sensor setup.
nice little door sensor. Didn't setup in Aqara app as only wanted to use Apple Home - installed in seconds. Now get alerts when the door opens and closes....

Overpriced
Do the job but overpriced. New IKEA devices do exactly the same at a quarter of the price

Easy to set up in AppleHome kit
Works well with AppleHome using Matter protocol. The magnet needs to stronger if using in a waterproof case on an external door/gate

Connected to Alexa and HomeKit via Eero router seems reliable
I chose a Matter/Thread sensor as I did not want to have to buy and connect another hub. Only been using it for a few days but so far the sensor seems to work reliably. First of all I had difficulty pairing with Alexa app; the app indicated that I had a Thread network which I selected but the pairing failed. It turned out that I needed to turn on the Thread network in the Eero network settings (even though the Alexa app thought it was already there). After that all was fine and I was also able to pair it with Apple Home after first enabling HomeKit in the Eero app (which took a little time to figure out). So overall works well with an Eero router once you have the correct Eero settings.

Easy setup, amazing battery, definitely recommend.
This is one of the easiest sensors to setup in my Home Assistant ecosystem. Bought one and quickly bought a second one after seeing how reliable and easy it was. One is used on our balcony door (setup on the 90 degree corner where the glass door meets the wall) to ensure that if we go to leave the house without closing it, our home will tell us. Works like a charm and has given us peace of mind the cats are safe! When I saw how sensitive these are, I bought a second one for a snack cupboard. I placed the sensor on the inside of the cupboard doors and now if the cupboard is opened even a sliver, the home counts how many times, and gives a snarky AI generated comment if it's too high haha. These sensors are easy to forget about which is the idea, they're out of sight but they diligently keep an ever vigilant eye on things. happy to report that the battery is still 100% after 2 months! Will be buying more I'm sure.
