However, you may find it difficult to tighten the hex nut all the way to compress the lock washer, as the ball easily moves while you're trying to tighten it. Many hitch balls out there have straight edges at the base of the ball so that you can grip with pliers while you tighten the nut. This doesn't have a straight edge.So, to tighten the nut, place a rubber gasket (or rubber pot holder) over the ball and in one hand use large pliers to squeeze the ball while you use your wrench in the other hand to tighten the nut.
