The result is that those shoes look odd and have a kind of 'naked' look in the front. Fortunately, the current Chukka model has sides that pull normally close together in the front when the laces are tightened.Still, this manufacturer has trimmed material so far that these are the lightest pair of Timberlands I have purchased. I have worn Timberland boots for decades and appreciated the firm, rubber or rubber-like soles with an island sort of pattern to grip any surface on which I walk. These have been very good for inclement weather and winter conditions, as well as multiple indoor surfaces. The present pair (unlike the previous Chukka pair mentioned above) abandons the traditional Timberland sole-grip pattern for a lighter-weight material as well. I have not had the chance to wear these in winter weather yet. The grip on linoleum, for instance, is good, but testing them on ice will need to wait.I am not sure that the seal between body and sole will last the many years that past Timberland boots I have purchased lasted. There are signs that the method of connection of the body of the shoe to the shoe bottom may come apart or be insecure already. It seems that these shoes are more cheaply manufactured, in the amount of material, the method of assembling parts, and quality than I have expected from Timberland boots in the past.In sum, the appearance and comfort provided are good and as I would expect. I am not sure, having recently received these shoes, how they will perform over time and do not wish to prejudge them. Lightness may be seen as a virtue in shoes, but I suspect it also is the result of an effort to minimize the expense of manufacture. It is too early for me to rate the shoes as to durability or as to the effectiveness of tread on difficult surfaces such as winter ice. This explains my four-star rating: in what I can confidently judge so far, I am pleased. However, they are not heavy duty or hiking boots. The sole and insole are not up to that kind of punishment.The tightness across the toes that others have mentioned was definitely present when the boots arrived, but luckily the leather stretched out after a few days and that is no longer a problem. As for the size, your mileage may vary. My previous shoes were a 10.5W, and my army boot size was 9.5W, but these ended up fitting as 10W. In any case, Amazon was happy to swap my first set out for a smaller pair.The reason I'm only rating four stars is because the boots make an annoying popping sound when walking quickly. The leather across the top of the foot bends and audibly pops back into place. This happened with my first pair, and I assumed it was due to the boots being to large, but I was wrong. I was also hoping that breaking in the boots would eliminate this problem, but its been two weeks now and still they pop. Its not a deal breaker, but it is annoying. I'm going to try some boot polish to hopefully make the leather a bit more supple and less likely to pop. I'll update this review when and if the problem goes away.One Month Edit: Popping still there, but it has definitely reduced in both volume and frequency. Boot polish wasn't very effective at softening the leather, but I will say that the appearance of the boots do benefit greatly from a light coat every two weeks as well as daily brushing. Down at the very bottom of the shoelace, my foot felt REALLY tight. I wound up getting a knife and cutting the beautiful stitching work underneath that area and it opened up the shoe just enough for my foot to breathe and get relieved of the pressure. LOL! I have worn these ALL week since I modified them and they are super comfortable. I am on the move all day for my type of work and I don't feel any discomfort whatsoever. Good price and fairly prompt delivery (4-5days) considering it was FREE.
