Using a stud finder, identify the location of two studs. The exact horizontal locations wont be precise, but don't worry about that. Just mark where you want the top and bottom inner lip of the safe to be (ie 2 horizontal lines - one on top and one on bottom). Locate the studs using a sheetrock saw, and draw your box on the wall starting from the top or bottom lines. Then saw right down against your studs until you reach one of the horizontal lines.2. Remove any insulation that may be in the wall and be sure your cut lines are straight.3. Place the safe into the hole you just cut and using a pencil, mark the studs through the screw holes in the side of the safe. Drill out the holes you just marked. Be sure to use a drill bit that is a tad smaller than the shank of the provided wood screws. This will make it a lot easier to screw in the screw.4. Place the safe back in the hole and use a ratchet to fasten the wood screws. Review: Good product for the price - This safe arrived quickly and was well wrapped with corner protections. It was easy to install even though there is no instructions and I've even dismantled the mechanism to and evaluated that it is sturdy enough to keep honest thieves away. Some cheap safes for about the same price do have pins of plastic and can be unlocked just by rocking them, this one doesn't as all parts are metal, albeit not completely unbreakable. It also fits nicely in the wall barely protruding at all, no more than 3/8 of an inch, so concealing behind pictures or furniture is very easy. Programming a code is very easy and the provided key works just fine in case you loose your code. Make sure you're precise with your drywall cuts as the lip is only 3/8 inch and won't cover much over the opening. Sure, the metal door could be thicker and the locking pins could be more in the center to reduce any prying at the corners, but for the price, I think it's hard to beat. It does fit nicely between studs and I took the liberty to wrap it in a fireproof blanket to increase it's fire rating (comes with none), although it's surely nowhere near officially rated safes. With a 5/16 blanket around, it fits really snugly between the studs. Three main critics for this model: 1) the locking mechanism takes a lot of space on the inside, so you can't put anything bulky on the second shelf, 2) the shelves are pretty flimsy and will bend under even 30 ounces of weight, they also appear to be slightly crooked and not perfectly leveled and 3) the hidden stash at bottom is pretty useless, very shallow and as soon as you put something remotely heavier than papers on the lid, it pops open canceling the purpose of hidden storage and reducing the amount of heavy stuff you can put in the safe even further. But for the price, I think this is a reasonable product to keep your precious things away from loose hands. Id buy some stronger bolts that simply screw straight in. ones given have anchor bolts and I didnt like them but used them. **Q: How much does the keypad and knob stick out from the flat front?** A: You could also cut out the sheet rock over the stud along with the square you are cutting out. that would allow the flange to sink all the way in an extra half inch to the wood. then dress up the sheetrock somehow. smooth and paint it. **Q: Can this safe be securely installed between metal wall studs with mounting provided?** A: I believe so, but at the very most, you would have to pick up for self tapping, lag bolts. **Q: What are actual measured dimensions of this product (i.e. exterior dimensions including flange). Interior dimensions? Wall hole dimensions?** A: I can't give you an answer at this point, but I wrote a review which was detailed. Not so much about the dimensions as my disappointment- once I installed it, I realized what should have been obvious - the locking mechanism takes up a good 1 - 1/2 inches in the middle of the safe. The depth is not real deep, because it is flush with the drywall - but at least 2". The safe installation wasn't too complicated, a small amount of DIY to cut a hole in the plasterboard, screw the safe to the studs and tidy up. BUT - I didn't have any batteries to hand when I first fitted it. So I was just using the emergency key, maybe a dozen times. I finally get myself the right batteries but the key no longer opens the door!! I'm locked out.
