- Epic Zero Series: Books 1-3: Epic Zero Collection (Epic Zero: 6th Grade Superhero 3-Book Collections)

I was discouraged when I received the book. I was aware that it was 1-3 books, but I didn't expect them all to be in one book. "Great. He (my 9 y.o.) is never going to read it.", I thought. My 9 y.o. son does not like to read. He does not have the attention span for sitting around and read a book. The only time he would read is if the book has pictures (it doesn't have to be a graphic novel, but some sort of pictures to go with the story). So, when I received the Epic Zero 1-3 book, I was discouraged. However, I sat down and read the first chapter with him before bedtime to get a feel of the book and to see his reaction. To my surprise, he ENJOYED IT VERY VERY VERY MUCH. He went on and finished the book within 3 days and asked for volume 4 after that! I have since purchased the 4th book as well as downloaded the "extra" in PDF format and my son, of course, has read all of them. Epic Zero was his first book without any illustration. Thank you, R.L. Ullman for writing the whole series! You showed my son that it was possible to fall in love with a book without pictures. Please continue writing the series!!

I got this book on a recommendation, and my kids are so pleased. This series has been my kids' bedtime story for most of the last year, and they are still spellbound -- and I'm not tired of it either. Older kids could read it on their own, but my younger was 6 when we started, and has thoroughly enjoyed listening to it, night after night, as has my now-10 y.o.

i got this for my 11 year old. So far so good, the book keeps him interested and he reads a chapter every day. i think the concept is fun and has just a few words that he need to slow down and sound out.

Any time my kids beg me to keep reading, I know it's a good book. I have read aloud to them for many years and I'll continue until they ask me to stop. My kids are 11, 13, and 15 (boy, girl, boy) and they loved this set. We read all three books and my kids would have read a 4th if there had been one. My daughter was a little lost, but it's mainly because she doesn't always pay attention (she plays on her phone) so she missed key pieces of information. My boys hung on every word though and at times they were more aware of what was happening and what they thought was going to happen than I was. Kids want to be super heroes! They imagine themselves being able to fly and defeat villains. These books tell about a boy who thinks he can do nothing, but then realizes he has powers. It was funny, entertaining, and had good lessons. The bad guys lost; the good guys won. It ended well, and there wasn't any bad language (I think they said "sucks" once, but I substituted if for "stinks." Overall, we all liked it a lot!

My son and I have been reading books before bed since he was a toddler. Having exhausted the Potter series, Narnia, and the Dahl books, we were looking for the next thing to spark our imaginations. I did a google search and ordered the book 1-3 compilation based on reviews. Since then we’ve read through the first collection, and are now finishing up book 6 of the second. It’s been a fun ride. I’ll give you one word of warning - the author borrows heavily from the existing comic book mythos. And by ‘borrowed’ I mean there are a LOT of elements directly lifted from Marvel/DC lore - This may prompt some eye rolling with comic book readers, but the truth is that the author does know how to tell a good story, and the end of each chapter feels like a cliffhanger. I like to think of it as more of an homage, told from the perspective of a middle school boy.

This book has my son hooked! So much so that I already went and found the next part of the series before he was through the first 3 chapters. Because, he wouldn't stop talking about how much he was going to need the rest of the books and how I was going to need to read it when he was done with it. Not before though because he wanted to watch my reactions when I read it. To the author kudos for such a riveting book my 8year old rushes through his homework to pick it back up. I can't wait to read it myself.

This story truly sparked my 8-year-old son's imagination. He read the entire series in a matter of about a month. When there was some downtime between purchasing the next book, he would re-read the book he was currently on. By the time he got to the last book series, he finished about 500 pages worth in 24 hours. If your child has previously only read graphic novels and comics, this would be an amazing transition to more words and chapters. In our case, it has resulted in lists, games, and unique characters my son made up to complement these books. I Highly recommend it to your young reader!

At the end of the school year I purchase a book for my children as an end of year gift. My son was moving onto third grade, so I figured a chapter book would be more appropriate. Epic zero was one of the suggested books. We spent the summer reading the books together chapter by chapter. I think of our summer as the summer of Epic Zero. The story is engaging and exciting. The images were a great touch and fun to scrutinize again and again. My son and I simply adored these books. We just finished book 4, which sadly my son read without me — he couldn’t wait for us to do one chapter a night. These books are not in our library or the school, so please buy them! They’re fabulous! Buy the book, not the ebook to enjoy the pictures.

We bought this book for our seven year old to read himself, however it was a little too advanced for him, so I ended up reading it to him at bed time. This wasn't a problem as it's a really good read, funny, sad and quite profound in parts. The books are well written with good pacing to the story. What I particularly liked as a parent was that Elliott Harkness (main character) makes lots of decisions, some of which work in his favour, others do not, but he has to live with the consequences nonetheless, a good morale for real life. We will be purchasing the next books in the series to find out how he gets on in his new adventures! Highly recommend. My son enjoyed this and as we got towards the end of book three wanted to read more and more. The pictures and meta profiles at the end of each chapter, also help break up the story and provide a good reference for kids as to what superheroes might look like.

It took a few chapters for my daughter to get into the story. Overall she enjoyed it.

A great series of books and our 10 year old loves them! We've been looking for something to keep his attention since he finished Captain Underpants and the Dogman series a couple of years ago and we're so glad to have found these books! Definitely a more age appropriate reading level, story is more mature but still has humourous moments and he finds them really entertaining. Overall, a great transition series for young readers and we definitely recommend!

Great book, very exciting! I'm reading it to my 7 (nearly 8 year old). It has some language I edit out though like "freaking" and other low level swears.
