Are the shelves strong? If they were fully loaded up with books, would it hold up to it?

The whole bookcase is strong. The shelves hold great full of books and I have a two year old who likes to put a lot of weight on them as well and they don't budge at all. Also very beautiful. I am very happy with the high quality of the bookcase.

are the shelves really 17.5 in deep?

we have two sauder cabinets. i measured each shelf. the shelves are 141/4" on the upper 4 shelves. the lower 2 shelves are 161/2".

What color is the bookcase? Black or White?

The book shelf is an off-white color. Like a french vanilla.I bought one a few weeks ago. Beautiful craftsmanship and lots of space to fit even over-sized books.

Are the sides of this bookcase solid wood?

No - they are finished on both sides but are particle board - it is a heavy duty decent piece for the price - I would buy again! Liz
