Sewing techniques are sometimes overlooked in the design process but acquiring these skills can be transformational. The ability to turn a two-dimensional design into its three-dimensional realization comes from having mastered basic sewing techniques. Sewing Techniques simplifies the often complex techniques that lie behind this process by arming designers with the precise information and skills needed to undertake each task. Designers who develop a basic understanding of the processes involved in sample and garment construction often produce successful outcomes based on a more experimental and creative approach applied during the product development process. Developing a sample folio and being able to refer to samples and develop them according to each individual design project is a process that requires experimentation and creative thought underpinned by a basic understanding of sewing techniques. This book explores the essential equipment needed - from fabric types to diagrams identifying component parts of a sewing machine, to machine operation. Throughout each process, clear diagrams accompanied by explanatory description panels allow readers to achieve the best possible results, including how to troubleshoot problems that may be encountered before and during sewing. Each section concludes with a project, progressing from easy to challenging. Fabrics for each project give designers the opportunity to handle different fabric types and understand the complexities of sourcing and selecting. Mastering the basic principles covered in Sewing Techniques will enable both fashion students and the contemporary craftworker to develop their techniques with a view to becoming creative practice-based professionals. Review: Five Stars - Great book for our Fashion Students at Miami Dade College Review: Is it worth it? (Sewing Edition) - Chapters: 1.) Planning: Interview with Madame Van Gaans. 2.) Preparation:Interview with Ada Zandition. 3.) Closures:Interview with Jonathan Jepson 4.) Professional Finishing: Interview with Yvonne Lin,Emma Hardstaff,Funmilayo Deri,Louise Bennett's, Elie Saab. 5.) Toile/muslin/prototype development: Interview with Victoria Whittaker, Lea Pecker. 6.) Innovation within industry The interview sections are in three parts. 1.) Is a mini fact sheet about the designer given in about 8 paragraphs followed by 2.) the questions and answers. (Where do you get your inspiration.-Do you believe the creative process involves all aspects of garment realization-when do you consider the types of sewing techniques you intend to use within your collections-How much time do you spend considering sewing Techniques within the creative process- When visualizing the finished collection, do you think trims/notions are an important feature-How important is sewing within the design garment realization-What types of fabrics do you like-what is your advice for new designers). Followed by 3.) a quote from the designer and photos of their work on the catwalk. This book was rather disappointing as I thought it would be a construction based book. It does have some construction information and a section talking about fabrics in there but nothing substantial. It seems the majority of the book is telling how important paying attention to construction details is for great fashion design. It's a shame it doesn't show you how to achieve good construction and the construction information that is included is laughable and downright disappointing. How the process of sewing influence's the design process is the basis of this book and the title should have reflected its purpose.I really hope this is not a required textbook for design school as this book is not a long term shelf life book that will assist someone in the design field, or with actual sewing. IMHO this is one of those meaningless books you are forced to buy while in school that does not have any real value. You wouldn't be able to put together a garment from this book and few people need an entire book dedicated to letting them know how important construction is to fashion design. If you lack in construction knowledge you can't properly relay or create your designs!!!!! For me at a price of $30.00 this book is not worth it.
