It could be a safety factor so that it is not hard down on the electricity if inadvertently switched on while empty – this is just a thought. Once water is in the kettle there is no instability at all.• Pre-1st use I boiled up the water, emptied and then rinsed the kettle out as per the User Guide. I did not find any smell or taste of plastic whatsoever.• The User Guide is in simple language and in English only, complete with an illustration and is perfectly clear.• The product has a 1 year Guarantee (receipt of purchase required). If the Kettle is registered on-line then an extra year is added to the Guarantee.• The length of the Power Cable from the stand to the end of the Electric Plug is 22½ inches.I chose White because it goes with anything, and having previously had kettles in Black, Shiny Chrome and Stainless Steel, because our water is so dreadfully hard, it does not take long for the tell tale white deposits to show up round the spout and other areas where the steam escapes.I have high hopes that this White Kettle will keep it’s smart, crisp good looks for longer (Will update that as time goes on)I genuinely recommend this Russell Hobbs Kettle.UPDATE - 14 April 2016We live in a very hard water area and this is the first kettle that seems to resist scaling up. The first one developed a sticking lid which eventually stuck fast so we had to fill the kettle through the spout - messy! Then the on/off switch developed a fault - only worked when it felt like it until after about a year, wouldn't work at all. Unfortunately, I didn't keep the receipt so felt as though I couldn't return it...but see later comment!The second one developed a very serious fault after 5 months. During the past month my wife said that on 3 or 4 occasions the auto switch-off didn't cut out when the water came to the boil. I nodded sagely and, as blokes are wont to do, did nothing. Then the other day she switched the kettle on, went upstairs to the bathroom and came down 10 mins later to a kitchen absolutely filled with steam. This time she called me in to witness that it wasn't her imagination and sure enough the kettle was still switched on and blowing out steam like Stephenson's Rocket. Enough was enough. Wow, dangerous! Luckily, I kept the receipt so back it went to Amazon and we await a replacement. And you know what? I shall keep the receipt and keep sending it back until I get one that works properly or until Russell Hobbs pull their fingers out and sort out these faults. I suggest you do the same or, better still, give this one a miss and get a reliable kettle. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Not as reliable as we had expected *by R***L on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 June 2015* Always rated Russell Hobbs highly for their kettles, and this one continues to support that belief. It is a slightly smaller capacity than the average, which is what we wanted, and is comparatively quiet, light, and well-balanced for holding/pouring. I expect to be using this for some years to come ... [edit 15/09/16] Sadly this kettle has lasted just over 1 year, before a seam close to the window began to crack and leak water. The quality of Russell Hobbs has dropped considerably! I notice this kettle was made in China ... there's your answer I guess.
