In the arduino ide, after getting the esp32 board modules, there is a very long list of different types. which should be selected for this board?

Yes there is a module you can install in Arduino IDE called ESP Dev Module. Also you can use this libray https://esphome.io/

Can you use the arduino ide with this board? is esplorer an alternative to the arduino ide, what's the benefit of one vs another with this board?

Yes you can use the Arduino IDE with this board. Never heard of esplorer, have not used it so cannot compare the two. I've never had any issues with Arduino IDE though.

I have windows 10 and just doesn't recognise the board I've tried all drivers old and new, any ideas?

I use win 10 and it works with the Arduino compiler, which has the Esp32 library installed. I had a similar problem once, which was the usb cable. It turned out to be a 'Charge Only' cable, which didnt have the signal wires. So the PC could not 'see' the esp32. I hope this helps
