With a DSLR Camera, the Counter Weight was helpful to steady the tripod.Inexpensive Tripod: The Counter Weight was Necessary, even if the HCM was Not extended to it's Max. The The Counter Weight stieded the Tripod and prevented Sag of the HCM. No matter what Device was Mounted on the HCM (Smartphone, Tablet or DSLR).Also, The Bluetooth Shutter Release (that came with the HCM), was very handy with My iPhone.I used a 10 sec. timed Exposure, for My DSLR. The HCM Bluetooth Shutter Release, did not work with my DSLR Camera.I am very pleased with performance of the ALZO Horizontal Camera Mount. Photos were much easier to position if they were horizontal on a flat surface. I have a good tripod but it was impossible to shoot straight down. If I didn't, the photos would "keystone". It was easy to set up (I only needed directions to set up the bluetooth remote). Once I had it dialed in, I was able to reproduce a boatload of pictures in a very short time!
