It is definitely dark and spicy, but it also had heart and a lot of character growth. Eurydice was such a great heroine and I loved watching her shift from being overlooked to fully in control of her choices. The romance was intense and the chemistry between the three of them had me hooked, but it never felt like spice for the sake of spice. The emotional side of their relationships felt just as strong. The pacing kept me engaged from start to finish and the worldbuilding around the lower city and the political tension added so much to the story. It felt bigger than just the romance, though that part was fantastic. This is easily one of my favorites in the series so far. The way all of the characters are intertwined really helps me to keep a vivid picture of the city as a whole and what’s going on. The biggest pet peeve I have about this book is the number of typos I’ve noticed while reading. I always re-read sentences when I do find a typo just to make sure it’s not me being stupid or misunderstanding the sentence, but even after doing so, they were definitely typos. I would have just expected more from a published author, and I’ve never noticed this issue in her other books. Secondly, the spice started off strong in the beginning, but then from about the halfway point and on it was merely nonexistent. I’m sure not everyone prefers super spicy books, however this is my preference and I expected more based on the other books in the series! At the midway point, the book to me became very serious and was solely surrounding politics of the city. It was definitely a stark contrast to what I’m used to in this series, but for me was almost too sharp a turn.
