Boston's 'The Chimneys of Green Knowe' gets the Julian Fellowes Treatment - This is a really lovely film with a cracking cast. The story is a nice mixture of late WW2 reality and 18th century fantasy. The relationship between young Tollie and his grandmother is interesting as it develops from what appears to be polite indifference into something much warmer. The 18th century set ghost/fantasy/family history part of the story makes for an interesting mystery with its intrigues and jealousies, and the treasure hunt in the WW2 present it all leads up to is well done and ties up the two timelines of the story very nicely. The acting is excellent throughout. Apparently writer and director Julian Fellowes wrote the part of the grandmother especially for Maggie Smith, and she does his rather excellent script full justice. Timothy Spall is wonderful as the faithful groundskeeper Boggis and I also like Pauline Colllins (Shirley Valentine, remember?) very much as the cook/housekeeper. Everybody else is equally solid. The atmosphere on the country estate where both parts of the story are set is well captured - for both the WW2 sequences and the period setting a couple centuries earlier. It's the kind of setting Julian Fellowes clearly understands and revels in getting right. I really enjoyed watching the film. Lovely quiet entertainment for the family on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Highly recommended. The DVD has English subtitles for those who may need them. With Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville in it what's not to like? However, be warned - those of you expecting an adaptation of The Children of Green Knowe will be disappointed. This film is based on The Chimneys of Green Knowe, a later book in the series. The Children of Green Knowe is the first book and was made by the BBC into a wonderful children's series in around 1988 but which, for reasons best known to the them, has never been released on video or DVD (I read somewhere they wiped the tape!). The series starred Daphne Oxenford and Alec Christie and it was actually filmed in Lucy M Boston's Manor house at Hemingford Grey. In the Children of Green Knowe series Tolly goes to live with his great grandmother in her old manor house and gradually encounters the ghosts of the three children who lived in the house many years before (Toby, Alexander and Linnet). I wonder if the confusion over the books is why one reviewer thought it such a poor adaptation? In any event, this is an excellent and moving film, one to watch again and again.
