## Description

Building upon the unprecedented success of Zapp's self-titled debut and group leader Roger Troutman's solo debut, The Many Facets of Roger, along with those two album's hit singles -- "More Bounce to the Ounce" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," respectively -- Troutman returned in 1982 with Zapp II, a strong album again propelled by a mammoth single, "Dance Floor." Outside of the infectious single, which topped the R&B singles chart, Troutman stuck to his patented formula of vocoder-laden funk on each of the album's other songs. There isn't anything new here that wasn't on Zapp or The Many Facets of Roger, just more of the same; of course, this isn't exactly a bad thing, as Troutman retreads familiar ground effectively. At this point in his career, Troutman wasn't short on ideas and was able to inventively lay down dense, carefree funk with ease -- in sum, there's literally no filler here, impressive when you consider his prolific output during this era. Not quite as fresh as the first Zapp album but still a great album for its era.

Review: a good album. - you can't go wrong with zapp.
Review: 'Some Great Individual Tracks' - Containing a monster 11 minute plus version of their classic 'Dance Floor', Zapp 11 is worth buying for P funk collectors for this track alone. The other U.S R&B hit from the album was the almost as good 'Doo Wa Ditty (Blow That Thing)' of which, there are two different versions included here. The first is typical Zapp and in the same vein as 'Dance Floor' and their earlier seminal 'More Bounce To The Ounce'. The second version of the song takes the song into a more Jazzy direction and has some nice bluesy guitar playing on it. Of the other three tracks, 'Playin' Kinda Ruff' is of similar ilk to the first two tracks mentioned but less essential and 'Do You Really Want An Answer' and 'Come On' are less P funky, more traditional mid tempo songs. As a whole album listen this set dosen't really work but, to be fair, most albums of this kind from this era of dance music were not seriously compiled to be album listens anyway simply collections of 12" length songs and as such this set does very nicely.
