## Description

Meticulous and obsessional, DI Chandler and his unit are based in Whitechapel – an area drenched in dark history and sinister goings-on. It is where Jack the Ripper carried out his horrific crimes. It is where The Krays constructed their Empire of Crime based on sadomasochistic punishments. This series unearths a Whitechapel full of Gothic shadows, cobblestones and ancient hostelries. There’s fear in the Huguenot weaving houses of Wilkes Street, and terrifying discoveries in the dark corners and rooftops around Brick Lane. Ed Buchan joins DI Chandler and hard-bitten DS Miles as their historical advisor – operating out of the bowels of the police station among musty tomes of the crime archive. Chandler is convinced crimes of the past hold the key to solving crimes of the present. The team is tested by bloody and vicious murders on their own doorstep. Do crimes such as the Thames Torso murders, HH Holmes, The Zodiac Killer and The Ratcliffe Highway murders unlock the truth? In Whitechapel, history isn’t dead - it’s deadly.

Review: Very good thrid instalment! - This third instalment differs from the previous ones since this time, we have three stories divided in two parts instead of one story in three episodes. DI Chandler has to deal with a killer hiding inside walls, a poisoner/dismemberer and a vengeance-seeker while coping with problems of his own: keeping his OCD under control and getting a date! Fortunately, DS Miles is here to keep the team on line - and play occasional matchmaker for his shy superior officer. The murders are horrific, mixed with fearful situations (a fox running through London to scavenge human remains, a house haunted by the spirit of a murdered little girl, a killer wearing an ugly mask) and disappointing dead ends, but there are also light-hearted scenes like the friendly banter between Chandler and Miles, the antics of overly-enthusiastic historian Buchan and the general interaction through the teammates, with a special mention to hero-worshipping Kent, who gets jealous each time a woman expresses interest towards the DI: he looks like a little brother who resents the presence of a girlfriend near his older sibling! All in one, a very good new season with its usual mix of past and present crimes. Waiting for season 4!
Review: Gripper of a Ripper - Whitechapel series 1 - I remember watching this on tv some time ago, and thought it good then. However having received the dvd I sat down to watch just one episode, and ended up watching the whole dvd. The acting is superb, and Rupert Penry Jones is excellent as a newly promoted DI not really knowing his way around a case like this, and coming up against a case hardend D S Miles who thinks he knows it all. You can really feel for Ruperts D I Chandler as he battles against the top brass as well, in order to try and solve the copycat ripper murders. He gets the help of "ripperologist" Edward Buchan, and at one stage even suspects him of the murders. How D I Chandler eventually gets his team working together and earns their respect is well put over. A gripping dvd, well worth buying. I am now about to get Whitechapel series 2 & 3.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Gripper of a Ripper - Whitechapel series 1

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice addition to the series
*by T***T on 8 March 2013*

I have to say I liked the format of Series 3 with the multiple stories instead of the single plot line. That said Series 1 is still the benchmark against which to rate anything that followed and Series 2 in my opinion was unfortunately wide of the mark. Here however the shorter stories work well rattling along at a fair pace yet still allowing character development and also keeping us the viewer entertained. The only minus point for me was that Ed is still there and if they decide on a 4th series they may find more freedom in the interplay between DI Chandler and DS Miles if he isn't and this would also help widen the breadth of storylines still further i.e. not having continually having to find some link to a previous crime from another century.
