The squares are measured by the broken line. Firstly cut our your circles, using a rotary cutter, but I find it easier to draw them on the fabric and use scissors to cut them out. Mark on the circles the outer broken line. Place two circles (wrong sides) together and sew on one of the broken lines. Continue with the other circles until uou have a number sewn together. THEN place your squares in the centre using your stitching lines as a guide, glue or pin in place. Fold over your round flappy bits to cover the square edges, pin or glue. Then machine the curved sections in place. I have to say that a dinner plate/side plate/ pudding basins, provides just as good a template. Fold over the edges to work out the size of the inner square.
