Valve stem packing needs to retain pressure on the stem and this is why hemp, graphite (for high temperature applications) and PTFE reinforced with glass fibre are all used. Some valve stem seals are a fibrous type of compressible washer. If you use this Loctite product in this way it will leak. **Q: Does this stuff have an expiry date?** A: I would say not as it seems to me to be PTFE tape except in thread or rope form and PTFE doesnt have any expiry date as far as I know. I bought this along with a high temp gasket maker and the gasket maker seems to be far better. **Q: How do you apply it to a tap or other connector ?** A: You just wrap it around the threaded part in a zig zag motion so it crosses all the threads ...about 7 times..don't just follow the threads ..it won't work that way ...look on YouTube for the best explanation...it is great stuff .I use it rather than PTFE tape ,it's much better and stops leaks even if you have to turn the tap back a quarter turn to set it vertical ...was the best plumbing tape I,ve bought ...never bother with PTFE tape anymore .I,ve used it on dripping garden taps ,and it works first time **Q: Would this work as a gasket seal on a water heater? It's all I can find that's water safe and up to the temperature.** A: It’s only for use as a thread sealant. Not really recommended for use as a gasket material. If you mean a gasket in the traditional sense ie between 2 flat surfaces the. High temperature materials are available or even ‘liquid’ gasket such as Hermotite. Be very careful for using on a water heater if high temperature and pressures are involved. Not that more expensive considering you get 50m *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 31 May 2023* Reviewed May 2023:Bought this after a recommendation from a YouTube channel on the best ways to ensure compression joints are totally sealed and he was using this stuff.Although regular PTFE is pretty cheap for a roll, its usually for 12 metres or so. (thats still a lot of pipes that can be sealed!). This loctite cord is 50 metres, I'm thinking this will probably last me the rest of my lifetime if I don't loose it.This is cord, not flat tape.. one lesson as that its not necessary to have tape flat (how much time and frustration has been spent in the past!).In the case of compression fittings, its a case of winding about 7 turns on the pipe below the olive (once the olive is in place from an initial tightening). Then, when tightening up, the cord is compressed under the screw fitting and against the olive. Its very tidy, with no cord/tape on show, and I had a 100% first time success rate of zero leaks!The casing has a cutter, which is helpful because it means you can cut it off one handed, and its red in colour which helps when trying to find it after putting it down.I'd buy this again if I run out or loose this reel. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very easy to use and far better than PTFE tape. *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 15 November 2024* I wish I had discovered this thread sealing cord earlier. It works very well and is easy to use.Unfortunately, the sticker Amazon places for their stock code obscures the usage guidance, so be careful to refer to the website if you can't peel it off successfully. The key is using the correct number of turns related to your pipe diameter, and in winding each turn across the thread rather than within the thread.I just knew it was going to work as I tightened each joint - a smooth resistance, which became higher as the end of the tightening approached. I particularly like the way a sealed joint can be re- orientated (for example, to align a tap) after assembly without losing watertightness. If you need to remove a joint, it's easier to clean the threads of this cord compared to PTFE tape, or sealing gunk. It's an updated version of the old plumbers' standby, hemp fibre.You get a lot of cord in the dispenser for the money, so I consider it decent value for money.
