It was bought as a present for a ten year old DJW fan, and having enjoyed the stories that my grand-daughter read a few years ago, I thought I'd sneak a look.It's up there as a fine example of the author's ability to deal very competently with issues that really concern children.Gaining independence and a sense of self worth when you are a shy, small, under-achiever is a well-worn theme in children's literature, and particularly the device of having competent siblings who make an less able child feel incompetent, with a bully hovering around for good measure.However, Jacqueline Wilson puts her own spin on things as ever. Tina is unable to engage in sporty activities due to heart problems , so that familiar angle of under-achiever redemption is closed off. Instead, there is a flower garden to be established with the aim of bringing butterflies to visit - hence The Butterfly Club.There's plenty of accurate information woven in to the story and as 'extras' for budding naturalists to enjoy, but as so often the key focus is on dealing with issues at school and home. The extension activities to the story are, as always, well written and worthwhile. A top read for children of 8 -11. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amazing book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 19 February 2015* When Tina's Gran and Grandad take her and and her other triplets to the zoo, Tina is mesmerised by the butterflies. In her school they are doing a project on life cycles and they start with the caterpillar, and Tina draws a beautiful picture of a butterfly and her teacher pins it on the wall.When she is ill her teacher brings her a book about butterflies, a sketch pad, pencils and some work to do.Because Tina has no garden at home Miss Lovejoy (her teacher) has an idea, she let's Tina make a butterfly garden in school, but there is one problem, Selma the class bully has to help her. As a result of working together Selma stops being mean and she and Tina become friends.This wonderful novel shows a little girl who is the weakest of the triplets, learning to stand on her own two feet, and a bully who changes a lot after being nicely by Tina.I am sure you will like this book because it is fast-moving, interesting (you learn a lot of facts about butterflies) and heart warming. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A rollercoaster read for 6 - 10 year olds *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 4 August 2020* I had avoided Jacqueline Wilson because I thought they seemed a bit worthy/issue led, didn't like the graphics.
