Ben Affleck's deserved Oscar! - I'm not a Ben Affleck fan in any shape or form be it his personal persona, as an Actor or a Director. The man has simply not impressed me at all. And, before the Haters start spew their vitriol my way, I lost any respect for Jennifer Garner when she broke her sacred marriage vows she made to Scott Foley in Hotel rooms all over Hollyweird with Michael Vartan. But I Digress, Ben Affleck was incredible in this Movie and hands down made The Accountant the only Movie that I've rewatched more than 3 times and purchased in over 5 years. My Son suffers from Autism and my ex Husband was in some ways like Chris's Father although he agreed with me that we should and did seek all available help for our now 16 year old Son. Affleck's performance was so subtle and didn't go overboard with the mannerisms of a High Fuctioning Adult with Autism as so many of his peers who do method acting would have. He excelled in the action scenes with my favorite scene being his character Chris waving goodbye to his farmer Clients after a particularly exciting day on the farm. JK Simmons is always excellent no matter the size of the Role he's playing or whether the format is the Small Screen or the Silver. He's an Oscar winner always giving Oscar quality performances in every job he undertakes. Anna Kendrick was Anna Kendrick except with some killer "Home Alone" Moves. And, even though she wasn't on the screen that long it was awesome to see Jean Smart as I've loved her since I first saw her in Designing Women. Whilst away at University, a group of us girls would all get together to watch Designing Women. I was completing my Masters when she left the show and it was never the same. If you saw Fargo Season 2, you know what a talented and versatile actor Ms. Smart is because she knocked the Role of Floyd out of the Universe. And, Cynthia Addai-Robinson is a uber-talented actress from the UK that had the intensity to match JK Simmons, Mr. YELLOW M&M PEANUT himself. However, he was the one melting Treasury Anaylst Marybeth Medina and the audience to tears. She was an integral part of the story and she proved she's more than a Supporting Acctress. As far as the Accountant goes, I thought the Father did the exact opposite of what needed to be done with Chris and Braxton. And, as the Mother of a Son with Autism, My heart aches for any child being purposely exposed to more stimuli be it light, sound, touching, staring or a devastating combination of all of them. This character was the reincarnation of the Great Santini played so brilliantly by Robert Duvall. The Great Santini was based on Pat Conroy's Father. Pat Conroy was an Author of many wonderful works such as the "Prince of Tides". The emotional scars left behind by his Father's brutality, selfishness, and lack of love were a constant reminder for Mr. Conroy which led to longtime battle with alcholism and he didn't suffer from any neurological ailments. For this reason, the Protagonist of the Accountant so well acted by Mr. Affleck is a remarkable person, for he overcame so much and never forgot his first true friend and nor lost the morale code his moral code. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS!!! Did anyone else realize that the Fixer who beat up Simon was Chris's younger Brother? I did immediately and so did all of you and the reason was because the writer was going to make a point about them being brought up by an Army Officer who trained his Son's with guns and had them taught physical self defense by the best in the world. And, the younger Son had the cold dead eyes in the flashbacks. What writer could resist having them both be Fixers. But, one had a Moral Code! Yes, I definitely wanted to see this movie BECAUSE I thought it WAS a "shoot-em-up action flick". (Hey, I'm a guy, what did you expect?) But, after seeing it, I was greatly surprised (and, just as GREATLY, pleased) to find that there was a highly intelligent, and thought provoking, story hiding in plain sight within this excellent "action" flick! (I guess the movie studios hid the "smart" part from us in the trailer because they think that we, the movie viewing public, are too dumb to be attracted to anything other than loud noises, bright lights, and nude (preferably female) bodies. Oh well.) If you look at this movie as just another action flick, then its pace, style, and, yes, action are MORE than enough to keep you interested (and pleased). AND, in addition, if you focus on its myriad moral and philosophical issues it is just as, if NOT more, interesting. Issues such as: how much evil are you willing to accept in the service of the "greater" good; and, how poorly people are treated (no matter what they have to offer) when they are judged to be "other"; and, how much personal responsibility are you willing to accept for the wellbeing of others; and, so on. I can't say enough good things about this movie. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. On a somewhat related side note: I notice that there are MANY people on social media (and elsewhere) who spend a LOT of time bad-mouthing Ben Affleck for his perceived (by them) lack of talent. Overall, this movie's picture quality should satisfy the vast majority of viewers. AUDIO: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 7.1 (48 KHz, 16-bit) The sound quality and mix of the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 soundtrack (the only one to which I listened) is very nearly reference quality. Another very fine example of the art of sound design in film from the artisans at Warner Brothers. Sometimes, my judgment is clouded by how positive a movie-going experience was. Case in point, I saw "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with my wife; it was our first real "date" in something like two years, and it was our first time really being out of the house since our son was born. The bar was therefore low, and considering the quality of the prequels, I wasn't expecting much of anything beyond how much I would enjoy the popcorn and Coke. When we left the theater, I raved on and on about how it was a "perfect" movie, a so-called "10 out of 10," and I basically said that it was better than "Harry Potter," "Hunger Games," "Twilight," and "Divergent" combined. Naturally, I was very wrong. The more time I had to think about the movie, the more I realized that, from an objective viewpoint, that movie really wasn't that good at all. In sharp contrast, I've spent the past few years watching A LOT of movies. I watch them in virtually every room in the house (even in the bathtub, thanks to my cell phone.) Since I'm a substitute teacher, there are days that I basically watch movies all day long (again, thanks to my iPhone.) I've watched old movies from the 60's and 70's all the way to the present. My dad and I have had some long conversations about what constitutes a "good" movie these days, if there even is such a thing. It takes quite a film for us to acknowledge that it has the potential to be a modern classic, much less a "masterpiece." "The Accountant" is one of the best movies I've seen in a long, long time. I vaguely remember Ben Affleck investing his time and energy making this movie and making sacrifices in the process, and I couldn't understand how a movie with this particular plot synopsis could be all that riveting. For crying out loud, with a name like "The Accountant," I just naturally assumed I'd hate it just about as much as I hate doing my taxes or talking to my wife about her college major. The movie has everything. Ben Affleck is wonderful and gives an Oscar caliber performance. The characters are all fleshed-out pretty well, so you actually understand their motives and empathize with their individual plights and motivations. Anna Kendrick is--well, I could write a whole book on how much I love that girl, so I'm always a bit biased toward her, regardless of what movie she's in ("Pitch Perfect 2" comes to mind--BLECH.) The guy who plays Shane on "The Walking Dead" is the kind of psychopathic hit man that is just plain so cool, you can't find it in your heart to hate him or even consider him the "villain." The movie's loving portrayal of military families, children with autism, and the parents of kids with autism is extremely refreshing. I have two sons, so the relationship between the two young boys in the movie really hit me hard emotionally. The action scenes are not just perfectly choreographed, their actually brutally realistic. If you like intelligent thrillers that are meticulously and strategically balanced with just the right amount of gunplay and martial arts, then this is the movie for you. The movie had a wide variety of potential morals, so it's hard to know what the movie's makers were trying to convey. For me, there were all kinds of messages communicated. When you steal money, even from bad people, it's bad. People are always afraid of what they don't understand; most people don't understand autism. No matter what challenges you have in your life, you can overcome them with discipline. Don't live a mediocre life. When you compromise your own principles, it's hard to live with yourself. There are things in life that are much more valuable than money. When you do bad things to people, bad things will happen to you. Numbers don't lie. If I had seen this movie BEFORE I saw "Batman versus Superman," Ben Affleck would have had my unreserved approval to play Bruce Wayne. Yes, he's just THAT good in this movie. Thanks for reading.
