**Q: Hi what range will this work over? Do you need to connect this to the mains like a telephone?**
A: You do need to plug into the mains, but I gather it transmits over the earth circuit of the house you are in. Its range is therefore as big as your house and bigger if, say, you have a shed in the garden which is also on your mains circuit.  Quality of transmission is 'good enough' but less good than a telephone. Its advantage is simplicity.
