Great little book for the van. Everything you need to know

This is a brilliant little book, and very easy to use, for identifying trees. It is very compact and easily fits in my jacket pocket (along with another two books of the same size!) but is still in enough detail to identify whatever you're looking at. Most pictures in the book are illustrations, but they are still very useful and clear, a few photos would be nice but the drawings are more than sufficient. I bought this along with the Collins Gem Mushrooms and Food for Free books, I'm glad I did as cross-referencing between the three makes me more confident about what I can eat!Fantastic for the price; for a beginner it is a brilliant buy.

A good little book with a basic information that helps with the identification of trees in the UK.

Absolutely loving this little book. As much as I feel like a bit of an anorak taking an interest in Trees (thanks Dame Judy for that), I can hide my nerdiness in my coat pocket and whip out this book whilst walking the dog. The trees are easily grouped by section and leaf shapes so identification even in Winter isn't too hard at all. Each tree page has extra interesting information and at almost 25mm thick, I know there are plenty more yet to discover. Fab little book, only wish all information was this easy to find without the use of electronics.

It's got them all and it fits in your pocket, what more do you need? haven't found a tree yet that wasn't in here. if it could be improved then a bit more on the properties of trees would help, such as edibility and toxicity of the various products, risk of dropping dead wood, and best uses of the different trees, such as bow or furniture making, fire starting or other notable features like related fungi, bird or insect species. such information is not just a practical addendum but also gives a greater context and thus can be a useful aid to memorising each tree.

Like many people in the world I don't half like a good tree.I also am not fussy either - apple trees, pear trees, big trees or those little ones you get that people called hedges, I like the lot.However, like most people I have always been happy to look at a tree, or even ogle one from time to time, but I have no idea what they are or what they do.That is until I purchased this handy pocket sized manual.As I wouldn't want the average football or bingo enthusiast to get the wrong idea - it will fit into a pocket like you get on the side of a pair of cargo pants, as sported by those hooligans on skateboards that you see, but would not fit into the hanky pocket of a well made suit.Obviously I can't say if it would fit into the pocket of one of those dreadful 'off the peg' numbers, but I don't get my suits from Aldi so am not qualified to comment (nor would I be seen dead in a place like that so am not prepared to conduct the most perfunctory research).Anyway it is full of pictures, which should appeal to the football/bingo community, but also contains words for people who didn't go to a comprehensive school.The pictures are extremely realistic, although not life sized, whilst the words are exactly to scale, and about the same size as the words I use in real life.The irony is that the book, aimed at promoting an interest and education in trees, is made out of paper which, from what I gather, is made from baby trees, which makes me sad.I would also have preferred to see a few action shots of trees doing things, like attacking Isengard, or killing people like in The Evil Dead, but these are all portrait shots where the trees are standing still.They could have made it a bit more exciting by adding a few monkeys sitting in them, or a few birds waiting to fly away, but I suppose if they did the pictures might have to be bigger and render the book no longer suitable for a pocket.It isn't a problem as I have drawn a few in myself to brighten the book up a bit, and even included a couple of hedgehogs sniffing about, so it is a work in progress but I'm happy with the way its going.

Needed some references for a paper on English Trees and was perfect and full of lots of useful information and diagrams

A good pocket guide to our UK trees & handy to carry during trip to the countryside or even in towns and gardens. Clear photographs to help identify through leaves & fruits. My one issue is that there are many trees that bear fruits & nuts out there and although this book lists them for identification, it omits to inform which of these are safe to harvest for human consumption, hence the missing stars.

le dimensioni di questa piccola guida sono fin troppo piccole....tuttavia come contenuti si difende molto bene ed anche i disegni sono molto curati.che dire....alberi e piante non sono la mia specialità, ma sicuramente lo ritengo un ottimo aiuto per avere informazioni generali sulle specie di alberi più comuni.tuttavia, questa piccola guida forse si meriterebbe una mezza stella in più per il prezzo veramente contenuto!

The cover is tatty at the corners and like others said there’s no photos in the book. I prefer the other Collins Gem books I’ve got but this one still has lots of info.
