You can cut the message part off and just use the heating part.

It is a little heavy. However it is not like a weighted blanket. I love it

It has to be plugged in. But the cord is long. It works wonders for me.

Does the portion that goes over the shoulder have heat in it as well as the rest?

Yes, there is some heat over the shoulder but the majority of the heat is spread in the back and neck area. This is the best one out of all the ones I have. Once your neck and back is warm, your body will feel warm too. Another good thing about this one is that when your hands get cold, you can just put your hands between your back and the heating pad to get them warm.
