## Description

From the manufacturer What is vermiculite? Vermiculite is the name of a group of hydrated laminar minerals (aluminium-iron magnesium silicates) which look like mica. Horticultural vermiculite is processed with massive heat that expands it into accordion shaped pellets composed of multiple layers of thin plates. It will not rot, deteriorate, or mould and is enduring, odourless, non-toxic and sterile. Newly seeded lawns can benefit from an application of vermiculite. Mix 3 cubic feet of vermiculite per 100 square feet, seed, then cover the entire area with ¼ inch of vermiculite. Water in with a fine spray. The vermiculite will hasten germination and increase the number of seeds that germinate while maintaining moisture and protecting from drying and heat. How should I use it? Vermiculite added to the garden or vermiculite in potting soil increases water and nutrient retention and aerates the soil, resulting in healthier, more robust plants. Add vermiculite to soil for conditioning and lightening either alone or in conjunction with peat or compost. This will accelerate the growth and promote anchorage for tender young root systems. Using vermiculite as growing medium will also enable the plant to more easily absorb the ammonium, potassium, calcium and magnesium necessary for vigorous growth. Vermiculite mixed half and half with soil, peat or compost eliminates packed down soil in flower pots and houseplant containers while allowing excellent aeration, reducing watering frequency and allowing root spread. Available in 100L and 10L bags

Review: Vermeculite for Plants - A Game Changer! - So, what is Vermiculite? It’s a natural, non-toxic, and sustainable alternative to peat moss and perlite. It's made from the mineral vermiculite, which is rich in nutrients and helps to improve soil structure, drainage, and aeration. I've been using Vermeculite in my plant babies' soil for a few years now, and the results are nothing short of amazing! My seedlings are thriving, and I've noticed a significant improvement in their growth and overall health. Here are some of the benefits I've experienced: Improved drainage: Vermeculite is incredibly lightweight and helps to prevent waterlogging, which can be detrimental to plant growth. Better aeration: The vermiculite particles help to break up the soil and improve air circulation, which promotes healthy root growth and overall plant health. Increased nutrient retention: Vermeculite has a high cation exchange capacity, which means it can retain and release nutrients as needed, providing a steady supply for your plants. Reduced transpiration: By improving soil structure and aeration, Vermeculite helps to reduce transpiration, which can help to prevent overwatering and promote healthy plant growth. I could go on and on about the benefits of Vermeculite, but I'll sum it up by saying it's a must-have for any plant parent! It's easy to use, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. In conclusion, I highly recommend Vermeculite for plants to anyone looking to improve their plant babies' soil and promote healthy growth. Give it a try, and you won't be disappointed!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What grade is the vermiculite is it 5 to 3ml or 3 to 1ml i need fine stuff**
A: the bag I purchased is quite fine I use it mixed with compost for seed germination and to give room for rooting and then put a small layer about 3mm on the top to maintain moisture If using in a confined space a face mask is a good idea

**Q: Is this the same vermiculite they use in gas fires to provide a glowing ember effect?**
A: It's likely that vermiculite used in fires has been treated to be hydrophobic

**Q: How many litres of prlite do you need for a medium sized vege pod**
A: Not sure what you mean for an average size. These bags won’t go far, and are better for pots and trays. If you need to improve drainage and airation of a veg plot, you are better of digging in compost, and horticultural grit. It would be a lot cheaper too

**Q: is this what I need to mix into soil of a bed of plants such as Lavender, Santolina and Sedums etc? for VERY WELL DRAINED soil. Thanks**
A: Those are mediterainian plants so are after well drained DRY soils. Vermiculite will give you well drained MOIST soil. Look for horticultural grit or sand instead. Don't confuse drainage with moisture requirements.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Mine was fine grade
*by S***H on 19 September 2017*

This is perfectly good vermiculite, but I wish sellers/producers would list the grade size on the bags or in product info. This is fine grade, at least mine was - maybe my bag was filled from the bottom of whatever container bags are filled from. I am confused, because the bulk bags by Plant It seem to be far bigger particle size than in the smaller bag I got. Either this bag was an exception, or they do 2 grades, and sell the larger grade only in bigger bags... Based on the varied answers to questions, I thought this would be medium grade, but mine is definitely fine grade, sized between 1 - 3 mm, of which I already have a bag. I suppose the clue is in the picture on the front of the bag: it shows seedlings, and fine grade is usually used for seed germination. Vermiculite is good for covering seeds and adding to compost as it holds water and nutrients. It also aids with aeration and drainage of the soil, although perlite is probably better for that. I add both perlite and vermiculite to a lot of compost mixes (I think between 10-30% is usually added), and use fine grade vermiculite for seed sowing. I either cover the seeds in vermiculite, or for fine seeds, you can mix them with vermiculite to aid even dispersal. I wanted medium grade vermiculite to add to compost mixes, for which you can use the fine grade, but for mixes with larger (and even) particle size, fine grade is no good. If you want (probably) fine grade (although one buyer said this was medium grade), then this is a good product. If you want medium grade, this is not it, if my bag was typical.
