Solidly made, bound in a large hard cover with thick individual pages (all 365 of them), right off the bat you know you've got your money's worth already. The architectural detail of the power helmet and writing are backed in gloss against a flush matt black surface. Take my word for it that this was no last-minute put together job as some desperate means of cash in. These people were passionate about the world they created and it exudes right out of this totem of artistic genius. The book contents itself is essentially divided into individual chapters (Preproduction, World, Characters, Creatures, Weapons, Vehicles, Set Dressings and Illustration) with a forward by Istvan Pely, the lead art designed for the game and a credits (plus a two page-spread top down photograph of the geniuses over at Bethesda.) Each chapter showcases freehand concept sketches and paintings with commentary alongside computer-rendered graphics of Power Armor models. Todd Howard (game director) stressed attention to detail, and how that all comes together to convincingly create this world we immerse ourselves in; subway stairs, terminal buttons and weather palettes, things that half the time, when we are in the heat of battle, fighting alongside the Minutemen against six Institute coursers with Mirelurks creeping up and two Vertibirds swarming overhead to the sound of Iron Zur's Dominant Species, so easily forget. Then there are the more obvious architectures: the secretive utopian dream of Father underground, the iconic BoS's Prydwen airship overhead, Vault 75's revamping by the Gunners, Wreck of the FMS Northern Star, the Glowing Sea and Memory Den etc. One of the points Todd raised in an early interview was the importance of the world before the bombs dropped, and all of the pre-war Americana culture is really fleshed out here. You can really see the strive and detail they've gone into to home in on the apparel worn, the cars driven, the games played by the children (come across Jangles The Moon Monkey on your travels?) Mr Handy boxes, to give those Britosh toff-talking, lovable robots more character too. Those pretty awesome looking comic books that carry unique perks and benefits are printed colourfully, some on an individual full page spread. Grognak, Massachusetts Surgical, Total Hack, La Coiffe, Tesla, they're all here. And of course, the Nuka Cola advertisements too. All of this, it's important to remember, is a comical, satirical nod to the anti-communism, sexism and self-indulgence that prevailed in a stagnant world where technology and military excelled to new revolutionary heights yet society revelled in its ignorance. Simultaneously, it's a moment to fully appreciate the time and dedication these artists went through to breathe life in it all. It's a paradoxical marriage; a fluid painting in motion of hyper-violent comical imagery and sombre, dismal literature of what time and man worked with to destroy and ultimately rebuild. Fallout 4 capitalised more on the 21st Century and how, 200 years afterwards, democracy, autocracy and governmental institutions crumbled, yet the shells of their former houses and leaders remained in contextual relevance. Humanity reached a desperate new generation of survival, and groups conglomerated, each with social statuses and attitudes that ushered in and defined a new era of post-war. Their paintings are scattered across inns, bars and hotels at the Great Green Jewel and Goodneighbor. The respective old Baseball stadium at Fenway Park, akin to its nefariously shady Scollay Square, is now a bustling settlement full of rich stories and characters beautifully detailed here. If you're a die hard Fallout fan, this is a no-brainer buy. Or if you happen to know someone who is, this will make the perfect Christmas present. If it doesn't compliment the game you or they may have, it'll certainly whet their appetite for when they do nab their hands on a copy. A perfect stocking filler (assuming of course your stocking filler is lead-lined, and filled with some Cram, Salisbury Steaks and a Nuka Cola Cherry) and pinned to your brand spanking new T-51f Power Armor at Red Rocket Station. Bethesda, you have outdone yourself again.
