### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A bargain, at Amazon Warehouse prices

Buying this camera via an Amazon Warehouse deal solved a problem for me. Basically, I wanted to upgrade my NEX 5 and still use the same e-mount lenses, but didn't like the price Sony were asking. The deal I chose was listed as very good with no cosmetic imperfections and tested as being in full working order. This is one below the 'as new' category, which as far as I can tell means that the box it comes in is also perfect. The box didn't matter so much to me, so I took the chance, trusting that the 30 day returns Amazon backing would allow me to test the camera very well. Sure enough, it arrived in great condition and I took it on holiday to Madeira, a sub-tropical paradise with plenty of things to photograph in a variety of conditions.Initially, I found the camera less familiar than I'd expected. But, quickly came to terms with the changes, most of which were for the better. The frustrating menu system of the Nex series has gone, replaced by something much more intuitive, although occasionally still difficult to find the odd item. The kit lens that comes with the model I bought (prospective buyers should take care that they are buying a model WITH the lens included) soon proved to be excellent in general use. Since returning home I've also tested it with a Sony E-Mount Macro lens, with spectacular results. The BIONZ processing engine combined with 24 megapixels and a superior-auto setting really helps an enthusiastic snapper produce better results almost without effort. And if you do put in the effort, using manually tweaked settings, this little camera can produce shots that easily rival those of the much more expensive Sony DSLR's, and in some respects out spec them. The camera is also really light, conformable in small to medium sized hands, and feels well made. Carrying it on a strap around my neck was no effort at all. So, there's lots to like here, and for those upgrading from the NEX series, this model is the best of the bunch IMHO. I say that because the A5000 model has lesser features and the A6000 model not that much more, yet at a huge difference in price. The A5100 models use the same basic tech spec as the A6000, but with auto settings left intact for those who, like me, prefer them under most circumstances. The one thing that may be a deciding issue for some is this model's lack of a viewfinder. But, if you're happy to take the rear screen settings off manual, so that you can see it well in bright sunlight, then this isn't really a big problem most of the time. For sure, paying out a lot more for a model with a viewfinder was not something I was willing to do.There are a few negatives. Firstly, Sony has scrimped on value by not supplying a lens hood and external battery charger, as it did with the NEX 5 model. This means that unless you buy your own, as I did, you'll need to plug the camera in to a power source every time the battery runs out. Obviously, this is no use at all in the field. As for the lens hood, this is what I consider to be a design flaw, which Sony has expanded throughout its recent range. It used to be the case that a filter, such as a UV shield, could be attached to help and protect the lens, and the lens hood attached via a separate fixing, which could be reversed for storage. Now, on the A5100 and other models, the only way to attach a lens hood and a filter at the same time, is to screw the lens hood into the filter. What this does is you are not VERY careful, is accidentally over tighten the filter thread, making is almost impossible to remove with finger pressure alone. If this happens to you a way out is to reattach the lens hood, and putting slight pressure on it an an angle, use the leverage to begin unscrewing the filter. But do take care, as too much pressure could easily crack the filter and possibly damage the lens. Proceed at your own risk.So, in summary this is an excellent buy for those upgrading from a NEX camera, or wishing to buy into Sony's A series mirrorless compact cameras for the first time. But, only at Amazon Warehouse prices. I paid just over £259 for this with the kit lens. I would not have paid the £400 plus that Sony want for a brand new model.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Small but packed full of great features

I've previously owned the Sony A3000 as my first foray into interchangeable lense cameras but found it to be a bit too bulky for my photography needs. Then switched to the Fuji XF1 which, whilst a really nice pocket camera didn't have quite the low light or fast autofocus performance I like. So when I saw the A5000 I was immediately intrigued and when the A5100 became available from John Lewis became available at £299 with a 16 - 50 kit lense I snapped it up.Why did I go for this? Well at 24mp, APS-C, 6fps burst mode and same autofocus system as the A6000 it promised to have everything I wanted in a small camera. And it really is small. With the very slim 16-50 lense attached, it sits comfortably in the palm of my hand and will fit easily into a jacket pocket. Although there's no viewfinder, the screen will tilt 180 degrees for selfies or vlogging and the brightness can be boosted to cope with bright sunny days. There's also a limited touchscreen facility which allows for selection of focus points in some modes. Although a welcome addition I'm at a loss to explain why they made the range of control options accessible via touch screen so limited. Which brings me onto the control system.The menu system is accessed via the dial on the rear, there's now physical dial to switch between modes or alter iso, shutter speed or focal length directly. So if you're coming from a camera which had this available this may frustrate. Given the camera is really aimed at those taking their first steps into mirrorless interchangeable lense cameras this may not be a major negative. The lack of physical buttons on the camera also limits the options for customisation. Despite these limitations the menu system will be familiar to anyone used to Sony's and I found it really easy to navigate. The usual range of manual options are there as well as a couple of auto options, large number of scene modes and three different movie shooting options. The last of these, the XVACS codec, requires an ultra fast class 10 SD card with at least 64gb capacity to access but once you have it gives the option to shoots in lovely slow movie effect video.The iso range is huge, up to 25600, and I found it produced really lovely images in low light at 3200 with very little noise. The autofocus is very very quick, capturing my less than cooperative cat with ease even when the light wasn't ideal and, with the ability follow a subject just by tapping it, the 179 focus points did a great job of rendering clear sharp images even in continuous shooting mode. Features like focus peaking will also be a huge help if shooting with manual lenses. The kit lense supplied gets a lot of grief from some quarters. Sure a fast prime or £1000 quid plus option will really get the best out of the camera and its sensor but as an every day lense the 16-50 is small, flexible and produces really nice images. The mount range is ever expanding and more third party suppliers are entering the market so there should be lenses available to suit whatever style of shooting you prefer. There's also some great adapters out there should you already have glass from different systems.The body of the camera isn't metal, nor is it weather sealed but it does have some nice weight and the small grip might prove an issue for those with bigger hands but I found it comfortable to use. The battery isn't big and will only last around 400 shots, but the spares aren't expensive and might be a useful option for those that like to have a back up on a long day. There's no hotshoe for external mic or flash but I found the pop up flash really decent and the ability to tilt it backwards was really useful for controlling some of the harsher effects. Would be nice to have a line in for a mic but again at this price point it's quibbling.In short the A5100 is a gem at this price point. It has the sensor and autofocus system of the much pricier A6000, a huge range of control options in the menu, great auto options that work well when you just want to point and shoot and an every expanding line up of emount lenses available. It's a terrific camera for those who want to progress their photography but don't want to be limited by the bulk of a dslr. It's an easy recommendation.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A good Camera for both the keen Photographer and the Family snapper

The LCD screen on my NEX-5N broke down very badly after just 17 months but Sony Customer Care luckily replaced it with the newer NEX-5T which also ran very nicely for 17 months until the LCD screen once again gave up the ghost. Unfortunately this time I encountered the Sony Don't Care Department and had to pay £117 for a replacement screen which is a pretty expensive way to run a Camera so I immediately sold it and sucker that I am, purchased the a5100. I have to say that the a5100 is a really nice camera and a great improvement on my previous NEX's in every way. The handling feels more weighty and solid and I much prefer the new Menu with its common sense layout and easy access using just the wheel and centre button instead of the fussy touch screen on the other models. The built-in Flash is a boon and gives excellent lighting despite its diminutive size and the new Wi-Fi feature is brilliant and already being used via my iPhone on a regular basis, keeping one photo on the Camera and automatically sending a copy to my iPhone which is neat. I reluctantly purchased the Sony screen protector PCK-LM17 from Amazon at £14 plus £3.99 p&p which is easily fitted and barely noticeable and hopefully this will make the camera last longer than the others but in truth I should never have had to do this if Sony quality was up to the job because I have a very old Nikon Coolpix which I use as my knockabout camera and the rear screen is still immaculate. The screens on my iPhone, iPad and TomTom Sat-Nav also receive quite heavy use under daily life and they too all remain flawless so Sony really need to get their act together regarding quality, unless of course they are making huge profits selling screen protectors. But if the screen fails me for a third time it will be goodbye to Sony forever. Getting back to the a5100 the battery charging point is miniscule and feels fragile so I hope it stands up to the wear and tear because I don't want to purchase the now separate charger which was included with my original NEX-5N, again less value for the Customer and greater profit to Sony which is all a bit too sly in my eyes, but other than those niggling issues I can heartily recommend the a5100 because it still offers first rate features and performance at what is now only a "reasonably" competitive price for both the keen photographer and the Family snapper. Note: this Review was posted on Sony's official website but they immediately removed it !!
