Never mind that Humpty Dumpty and Puss in Boots had a falling out years ago, or that Jack and Jill are completely preoccupied by their squabbling over whether or not to have a child--and regardless that Puss in Boots is a wanted cat who's sworn off his thieving ways, and Kitty Softpaws is a cat burglar who works alone. Comedy abounds in this film, not only in the twists and turns of some classic fairy tales gone awry, but with scenes that range from a litter-box dance fight between crowds of cats to Jack expressing his paternal instincts by strapping on a baby carrier filled with a piglet in a diaper, and, of course, Puss in Boots' crafty use of his famous sad eyes to get just what he wants. The animation is top-notch (especially in the mass cat scenes), the music is compelling, and the voice talents of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zack Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Amy Sedaris are solid. While considered by some to be a prequel of sorts to the four Shrek films, Puss in Boots is definitely a stand-alone spinoff. What the films do share is a common comedic interpretation of some well-known fairy-tale characters and knack for spinning a funny story that appeals to both kids and adults. I saw this movie advertised and decided I wanted to see it, but I missed it on the big screen cinema so the next best thing was to wait for the pre-ordered DVD to arrive from desertcart. It arrived as promised, and believe me I wasn't disappointed. It lived up to and possibly surpassed expectations. I was not expecting it to be like a fairy-story with swashbuckling animated character to boot, until I was reminded of his role in Shrek. I have only seen one Shrek movie, the first, so knew little about the character, but for me this did it. Everything about it is beautiful, romantic, daring and adventurous and this is now one of my favourite movies of all time-near the top of the list. I would recommend it as a present to anyone who likes animated movies. It is both endearing and enduring, a real charmer. I should know because it had me engrossed from the start. My mother shall be its next convert this Easter, I believe. I cannot recommend it highly enough! Review: Fun Movie With Fabulous Music Score! - I bought this at Xmas to provide some entertainment since the television companies don't seem to make that much of an effort these days, i was aware of the character from the Shrek sequels and was looking forward to viewing it on my new 60 inch 3D television, it comes supplied with a nice slipcase cover and the packaging actually looks really cool. The film itself was great, very inventive script, fabulous music score that stays in your head for weeks after you watch the movie, Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek were on fine voice form and there was amazing use of depth to the 3D image, there was also a couple of good pop out moments although not that many, this film is more about 3D depth than pop out, nonetheless i enjoyed it's use of 3D. I think children and adults can enjoy this film and i am looking forward to the announced sequel, i thought about knocking a star off because i think it could be sold cheaper but then i remembered that it is cheaper than many PIxar 3D titles so i decided to just call it 5 stars. P.S. They could not have made better choices for the actors whose voices they use for the characters. Puss in boots himself has a great attitude and goes from a frightened little orphan to a brave and courageous character. The naughty characters get their just desserts and it has a happy ending.
